Journal ArticleDOI
Two-billion-year-old evaporites capture Earth's great oxidation.
Clara L. Blättler,Mark Claire,Anthony R. Prave,Kalle Kirsimäe,John A. Higgins,P. Medvedev,A.E. Romashkin,Dmitry V. Rychanchik,Aubrey L. Zerkle,Kärt Paiste,Timmu Kreitsmann,Ian L. Millar,Justin A. Hayles,Huiming Bao,Alexandra V. Turchyn,Matthew R. Warke,Aivo Lepland +16 more
TL;DR: These results show that substantial amounts of surface oxidant accumulated during this critical transition in Earth’s oxygenation, and provide a constraint on the magnitude and timing of early Earth's response to the Great Oxidation Event 2.3 billion years ago.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hydrated calcareous oil-shale ash as potential filter media for phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands.
TL;DR: The hydrated oil-shale ash sediment can be considered as a potential filtration material for P removal in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ultrastructure and mineral composition of serpulid tubes (Polychaeta, Annelida)
TL;DR: There is no correlation between tube mineralogy, and ultrastructure, and marine, brackish, and freshwater environments, and it is found that 47% of the serpulid species studied possess a unique combination of tube structure characters.
Journal ArticleDOI
Electrospun nanofibers as a potential controlled-release solid dispersion system for poorly water-soluble drugs.
Urve Paaver,Jyrki Heinämäki,Ivo Laidmäe,Andres Lust,Jekaterina Kozlova,Elen Sillaste,Kalle Kirsimäe,Peep Veski,Karin Kogermann +8 more
TL;DR: Electrospinning can be used to fabricate supersaturating CR-SD nanofibers of PRX and HPMC, and to stabilise the amorphous state ofPRX.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phosphorus removal using Ca-rich hydrated oil shale ash as filter material – The effect of different phosphorus loadings and wastewater compositions
TL;DR: The results show efficient P removal (median removal of phosphates 99%) in horizontal flow (HF) filters at both sites regardless of variable concentrations of several inhibitors, suggesting direct precipitation of Ca-phosphate phases rather than an adsorption mechanism.
