Design strategies for water-soluble small molecular chromogenic and fluorogenic probes.

In this review we intend to provide a relatively comprehensive summary of the work of supramolecular hydrogelators after 2004 and to put emphasis particularly on the applications of supramolecular hydrogels/hydrogelators as molecular biomaterials. After a brief introduction of methods for generating supramolecular hydrogels, we discuss supramolecular hydrogelators on the basis of their categories, such as small organic molecules, coordination complexes, peptides, nucleobases, and saccharides. Following molecular design, we focus on various potential applications of supramolecular hydrogels as molecular biomaterials, classified by their applications in cell cultures, tissue engineering, cell behavior, imaging, and unique applications of hydrogelators. This tutorial review focuses on recent developments arising from studies of optical sensors for cyanide ions, which are categorized by approaches involving cyanide selective receptors, the utilization of metal coordinated complexes, and chemodosimeters.

In 1893, P. Biginelli reported the synthesis of functionalized 3, 4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones (DHPMs) via three-component condensation reaction of an aromatic aldehyde, urea, and ethyl acetoacetate. In the past decade, this long-neglected multicomponent reaction has experienced a remarkable revival, mainly due to the interesting pharmacological properties associated with this dihydropyrimidine scaffold. In this Account, we highlight recent developments in the Biginelli reaction in areas such as solid-phase synthesis, combinatorial chemistry, and natural product synthesis.

Azo dyes represent the largest class of industrial colorants. These are no longer used only for the coloration of textiles, plastics, paints, inks, and lacquers, but rather serve as key components in high-tech applications such as optical data storage, reprographics, display devices, dye-sensitized solar cells, energy transfer cascades, light-emitting diodes, laser welding processes, or heat management systems. Sulfur-bridged annulene-TCNQ co-crystal: a self-assembled ''molecular level heterojunction'' with air stable ambipolar charge transport behavior.

A synthetic entry into fused pyran derivatives through carbon transfer reactions of 1,3-oxazinanes and oxazolidines with carbon nucleophiles

Fullerene/sulfur-bridged annulene cocrystals with a two-dimensional segregated alternating layer structure were prepared by a simple solution process. Single-crystal analysis revealed the existence of continuing π–π interactions in both the donor and acceptor layers, which serve as transport paths for holes and electrons separately. The ambipolar transport behaviors were demonstrated with single-crystal field-effect transistors and rationalized by quantum calculations. Meanwhile, preliminary photoresponsivity was observed with the transistor configuration.

Fullerene/Sulfur-Bridged Annulene Cocrystals: Two-Dimensional Segregated Heterojunctions with Ambipolar Transport Properties and Photoresponsivity

Considering the availability of a vast array of fluorescence-based bioimaging agents, BODIPY probes are the cynosure of current times and fluorophores worthy of great admiration and attention owing to the promise that they offer in advancing the otherwise nascent, non-invasive diagnostic tool of clinicians: bioimaging. The identification and quantification of analytes in solutions, in vitro or in vivo using BODIPY probes have been shown with remarkable success. In this review, we have surveyed very representative and recent (2014 onwards) developments in the application of BODIPY probes to bioimaging and this should be a useful update to existing reviews on this topic.
