According to W. Edwards Deming, American companies require nothing less than a transformation of management style and of governmental relations with industry. In Out of the Crisis, originally published in 1982, Deming offers a theory of management based on his famous 14 Points for Management. Management's failure to plan for the future, he claims, brings about loss of market, which brings about loss of jobs. Management must be judged not only by the quarterly dividend, but by innovative plans to stay in business, protect investment, ensure future dividends, and provide more jobs through improved product and service. In simple, direct language, he explains the principles of management transformation and how to apply them.

The Circular Economy – A new sustainability paradigm?

The 2008 crash has left all the established economic doctrines - equilibrium models, real business cycles, disequilibria models - in disarray. Part of the problem is due to Smith’s "veil of ignorance": individuals unknowingly pursue society’s interest and, as a result, have no clue as to the macroeconomic effects of their actions: witness the Keynes and Leontief multipliers, the concept of value added, fiat money, Engel’s law and technical progress, to name but a few of the macrofoundations of microeconomics. A good viewpoint to take bearings anew lies in comparing the post-Great Depression institutions with those emerging from Thatcher and Reagan’s economic policies: deregulation, exogenous vs. endoge- nous money, shadow banking vs. Volcker’s Rule. Very simply, the banks, whose lending determined deposits after Roosevelt, and were a public service became private enterprises whose deposits determine lending. These underlay the great moderation preceding 2006, and the subsequent crash.

A multivariate quantitative approach for sustainability performance assessment: An upstream oil and gas company

Vendor selection is of strategic importance in any industry. This paper uses fuzzy tools for vendor selection to improve decision-making through a more systematic and logical approach. Expert opinion is portrayed by allocating different fuzzy weights to the linguistic data in the form of triangular fuzzy numbers (TFN). The scores are evaluated using fuzzy arithmetic operations and the index of optimism is used to evaluate the vendors. Also, to bring in consistency in the evaluation, results are compared with the fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS), another well known multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) approach affected by uncertainty. This concept, if adopted, can be used for any industry where vendor selection is based on a set criteria and linguistic judgement variables.

Introduction Greenhouse gas emissions resulting from human activity are increasingly causing changes in our climate, the consequences of which, such as global warming, will be predictably severe. As a result, low carbon emission has become a national development strategy in many countries. For example, some developed countries have inspired a paradigm shift in industrial and technical competition by increasing investment in the low-carbon economic field; formulating and implementing various bills, plans and strategies; and strengthening the implementation of low-carbon strategies. Developing countries, such as China, India, Brazil, Russia and South Africa, have also placed great importance on low-carbon development by issuing a series of laws and regulations to oversee the whole flow of the manufacturing, logistics, circulation and recycling of a product. Controlling carbon emissions, a concern originally stemming from pure transportation or production systems, has now become a serious challenge in the field of supply chain management (SCM). A redesign of the whole global supply network is needed to achieve a coordinated supply chain system under the latest, increasingly restrictive regulations. As a result, many critically important research questions remain unresolved, such as how does one promote low-carbon SCM and erase sustainability barriers in developing countries. Under these circumstances, it is evident that there is an urgent need for research related to emerging economies because traditionally these nations serve as a production base for many products’ global supply chains in the “non-carbon concern era”. For this special issue we received a total of 26 submissions, and, after a rigorous review and revision process, we accepted five papers for publication. In the following paragraphs, we provide a short review of each of the accepted papers, and we emphasize its major contribution. The first paper, “Contingency theory, climate change, and low-carbon operations management”, addresses the following research questions:
