Frequency Seriation, Correspondence Analysis, and Woodland Period Ceramic Assemblage Variation in the Deep South
Karen Smith,Fraser D. Neiman +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors highlight the analytical power and complementarity of two methods, frequency seriation (FS) and correspondence analysis (CA), for building chronological sequences, exploring rates of change, and recognizing synchronie spadai variation, in the context of the precontact history of southeastern North America.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecosystem stability and Native American oyster harvesting along the Atlantic Coast of the United States
Victor D. Thompson,Torben C. Rick,Carey J. Garland,David Hurst Thomas,Karen Smith,Karen Smith,Sarah G. Bergh,Matt Sanger,Bryan Tucker,Isabelle Lulewicz,Anna Semon,John F. Schalles,Christine M. Hladik,Clark R. Alexander,Brandon T. Ritchison +14 more
TL;DR: Measurement of ~40,000 oyster shells from archaeological sites along the Atlantic Coast of the United States provides a long-term record of oyster abundance and size, demonstrating increases in oyster size across time and a nonrandom pattern in their distributions across sites.
Journal ArticleDOI
Indigenous oyster fisheries persisted for millennia and should inform future management
Leslie Reeder-Myers,Todd J. Braje,Courtney A. Hofman,Emma A. Elliott Smith,Carey J. Garland,Michael A. Grone,Carla S. Hadden,Marco Hatch,Turner W. Hunt,Alice R. Kelley,Michelle J. LeFebvre,Michael J. TL;DR: In this article , the authors investigate Native American oyster harvest through time in North America and Australia, placing these data in the context of sea level histories and historical catch records, and find that oyster fisheries were pervasive across space and through time, persisting for 5000-10,000 years or more.
Journal ArticleDOI
Style in swift creek paddle art
Karen Smith,Vernon J. Knight +1 more
TL;DR: Reconstructed procedures for several paddle designs emphasize the stepwise nature of creating art in this style and the value of reconstructed whole paddle designs in the study of layout, symmetry, design concept, and other stylistic domains are demonstrated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identifying designs from incomplete, fragmented cultural heritage objects by curve-pattern matching
TL;DR: In this paper, a new partial-to-global curve matching algorithm was developed to identify the designs of the carved wooden paddles of the Southeastern Woodlands from unearthed pottery sherds.
