Airborne observations of the Eyjafjalla volcano ash cloud over Europe during air space closure in April and May 2010
Ulrich Schumann,Bernadett Weinzierl,Oliver Reitebuch,Hans Schlager,Andreas Minikin,Caroline Forster,Robert Baumann,Thomas Sailer,Kaspar Graf,H. Mannstein,Christiane Voigt,Stephan Rahm,R. Simmet,Monika Scheibe,Michael Lichtenstern,Paul Stock,H. Rüba,Dominik Schäuble,Arnold Tafferner,Marc Rautenhaus,T. Gerz,Helmut Ziereis,M. Krautstrunk,Christian Mallaun,Jean-François Gayet,K. Lieke,Konrad Kandler,Martin Ebert,Stephan Weinbruch,Andreas Stohl,Josef Gasteiger,Silke Groß,Volker Freudenthaler,Matthias Wiegner,Albert Ansmann,Matthias Tesche,Haraldur Ólafsson,K. Sturm +37 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors performed in-situ measurements of volcanic ash plumes over Europe between Southern Germany and Iceland with the Falcon aircraft during the eruption period of the Eyjafjalla volcano between 19 April and 18 May 2010.
Journal ArticleDOI
ML-CIRRUS : The airborne experiment on natural cirrus and contrail cirrus with the high-altitude long-range research aircraft HALO
Christiane Voigt,Ulrich Schumann,Andreas Minikin,Ahmed Abdelmonem,Armin Afchine,Stephan Borrmann,Maxi Boettcher,Bernhard Buchholz,Luca Bugliaro,Anja Costa,Joachim Curtius,Maximilian Dollner,Andreas Dörnbrack,V. Dreiling,Volker Ebert,André Ehrlich,Andreas Fix,Linda Forster,Fabian Frank,Daniel Fütterer,Andreas Giez,Kaspar Graf,Jens-Uwe Grooß,Silke Groß,Katharina Heimerl,Bernd Heinold,Tilman Hüneke,Emma Järvinen,Tina Jurkat,Stefan H. E. TL;DR: The Midlatitude Cirrus experiment (ML-CIRRUS) deployed the High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO) to obtain new insights into nucleation, life cycle, and climate impact of natural cirrus and aircraft-induced contrail cirrus as discussed by the authors.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Potential to reduce the climate impact of aviation by flight level changes
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the impact of changes of the flight level, typically 2000 ft (610 m) up or down, on the climate impact of a single flight.
Journal ArticleDOI
Aviation-induced cirrus and radiation changes at diurnal timescales
Ulrich Schumann,Kaspar Graf +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived the radiative forcing from aviation-induced cirrus from observations and models, assuming the background atmosphere without aviation to be similar to that observed in the South Atlantic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dehydration effects from contrails in a coupled contrail–climate model
TL;DR: In this paper, a plume-scale contrail model with a global aerosol-climate model was used to investigate the dewatering of the atmosphere at flight levels and redistribute humidity mainly to lower levels.
