Journal ArticleDOI
Sexual dimorphism of the somatotrophic axis.
TL;DR: This review will discuss male–female differences in the hormone levels, receptor concentrations and binding protein levels of the somatotrophic axis of this system, and summarise sex differences in growth phenotype and then discuss differences in temporal profiles of growth hormone (GH).
Journal ArticleDOI
Placental Restriction of Fetal Growth Increases Insulin Action, Growth, and Adiposity in the Young Lamb
Miles J. De Blasio,Kathryn L. Gatford,I. Caroline McMillen,Jeffrey S. Robinson,Julie A. Owens +4 more
TL;DR: It is shown that PR impairs glucose-stimulated insulin production, but not fasting insulin abundance or production in the young sheep, and that PR increases insulin sensitivity of circulating free fatty acids (FFAs), and insulin disposition indices for glucose and FFAs, which suggests that catch-up growth and early-onset visceral obesity after IUGR may have a common underlying cause.
Journal ArticleDOI
Placental restriction of fetal growth reduces size at birth and alters postnatal growth, feeding activity and adiposity in the young lamb
TL;DR: PR reduced size at birth and induced catch-up growth postnatally, normalizing weight and length but increasing adiposity in early postnatal life, which may contribute to these alterations in growth and body composition following prenatal restraint.
Journal ArticleDOI
Improving pregnancy outcomes in humans through studies in sheep
Janna L. Morrison,Mary J. Berry,Kimberley J. Botting,Jack R. T. Darby,Martin G. Frasch,Kathryn L. Gatford,Dino A. Giussani,Clint Gray,Richard Harding,Emilio A. Herrera,Matthew W. Kemp,Mitchell C. Lock,I. Caroline McMillen,Timothy J. M. Moss,Gabrielle C. Musk,Mark H. Oliver,Timothy R. H. Regnault,Claire T. Roberts,Jia Yin Soo,Ross L. Tellam +19 more
TL;DR: The aim of this review is to highlight the advances in perinatal human medicine that have been achieved following translation of research using the pregnant sheep and fetus.
Journal ArticleDOI
A review of fundamental principles for animal models of DOHaD research: An Australian perspective
Hayley Dickinson,Timothy J. M. Moss,Kathryn L. Gatford,Karen M. Moritz,Lisa K. Akison,Tod Fullston,Deanne H. Hryciw,Christopher A. Maloney,Margaret J. Morris,Amy L. Wooldridge,John E. Schjenken,Sarah A. Robertson,Brendan J. Waddell,Peter J. Mark,Caitlin S. Wyrwoll,Stacey J. Ellery,Kent L. Thornburg,Beverly S. Muhlhausler,Janna L. Morrison +18 more
TL;DR: This review summarizes the contributions of animal research to the understanding of DOHaD, and makes recommendations for the design and conduct of animal experiments to maximize relevance, reproducibility and translation of knowledge into improving health and well-being.
