Journal ArticleDOI
Quantitative profiling of the full APOBEC3 mRNA repertoire in lymphocytes and tissues: implications for HIV-1 restriction
Eric W. Refsland,Mark D. Stenglein,Keisuke Shindo,John S. Albin,William L. Brown,Reuben S. Harris +5 more
TL;DR: A general model in which multiple APOBEC3 proteins function together to provide a constitutive barrier to foreign genetic elements, which can be fortified by transcriptional induction is suggested.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vif hijacks CBF-β to degrade APOBEC3G and promote HIV-1 infection
Stefanie Jäger,Dong Young Kim,Judd F. Hultquist,Keisuke Shindo,Rebecca S. LaRue,Eunju Kwon,Ming Li,Brett D. Anderson,Linda Yen,David J. Stanley,Cathal Mahon,Cathal Mahon,Joshua Kane,Joshua Kane,Kathy Franks-Skiba,Kathy Franks-Skiba,Peter Cimermancic,Peter Cimermancic,Alma L. Burlingame,Alma L. Burlingame,Andrej Sali,Andrej Sali,Charles S. Craik,Charles S. Craik,Reuben S. Harris,John D. Gross,John D. Gross,Nevan J. Krogan +27 more
TL;DR: It is revealed, using an affinity tag/purification mass spectrometry approach, that Vif additionally recruits the transcription cofactor CBF-β to this ubiquitin ligase complex and is required for Vif-mediated degradation of APOBEC3G and therefore for preserving HIV-1 infectivity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure of the DNA deaminase domain of the HIV-1 restriction factor APOBEC3G
Kuan Ming Chen,Elena Harjes,Phillip J. Gross,Amr Fahmy,Yongjian Lu,Keisuke Shindo,Reuben S. Harris,Hiroshi Matsuo +7 more
TL;DR: The structure of the APOBEC3G catalytic domain will help to understand functions of other family members and interactions that occur with pathogenic proteins such as HIV-1 Vif and Escherichia coli-based activity assays.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Enzymatic Activity of CEM15/Apobec-3G Is Essential for the Regulation of the Infectivity of HIV-1 Virion but Not a Sole Determinant of Its Antiviral Activity
Keisuke Shindo,Akifumi Takaori-Kondo,Masayuki Kobayashi,Aierken Abudu,Keiko Fukunaga,Takashi Uchiyama +5 more
TL;DR: The mutagenesis analysis on two cytidine deaminase motifs in CEM15/Apobec-3G indicates that the enzymatic activity of this protein is essential but not a sole determinant of the antiviral activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Crystal structure of the APOBEC3G catalytic domain reveals potential oligomerization interfaces
Shivender M.D. Shandilya,Madhavi N. L. Nalam,Ellen A. Nalivaika,Phillip J. Gross,Johnathan C. Valesano,Keisuke Shindo,Ming Li,Mary Munson,William E. Royer,Elena Harjes,Takahide Kono,Hiroshi Matsuo,Reuben S. Harris,Mohan Somasundaran,Celia A. Schiffer +14 more
TL;DR: The crystal structure of the catalytically active C-terminal domain was determined and this structure corroborates features previously observed in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies, a bulge in the second beta strand and a lengthening of the second alpha helix.
