Journal ArticleDOI

Diel vertical migration of Arctic zooplankton during the polar night

TL;DR: It is argued that even during the polar night, DVM is regulated by diel variations in solar and lunar illumination, which are at intensities far below the threshold of human perception, which suggests that the biologically mediated vertical flux of carbon will increase if there is a continued retreat of the Arctic winter sea ice cover.
Journal ArticleDOI

Stage-specific mortality of Calanus spp. under different predation regimes

TL;DR: The results indicate that mortality patterns suffered by natural zooplankton populations may differ greatly over short geographical distances, and it is suggested that the predator community and mortality patterns must be considered when addressing the spatial and temporal dynamics of zoopsan populations.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Arctic sea butterfly Limacina helicina : lipids and life strategy

TL;DR: The sea butterfly Limacina helicina was collected from May to September 2001 to investigate population structure and body and lipid composition with regard to life cycle and reproductive strategy and enhanced amounts of free fatty acids in females from July may be related to gonad development.
Journal ArticleDOI

Stage-specific mortality of Calanus finmarchicus, Pseudocalanus elongatus and Oithona similis on Fladen Ground, North Sea, during a spring bloom

TL;DR: It is shown that the risk of mortality changes substantially over the life span of the animals, with notable differences among species, which may account for its numerical dominance in many ocean regions.
