Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change

The link between protected areas and tourism is as old as the history of protected areas. Though the relationship is complex and sometimes adversarial, tourism is always a critical component to consider in the establishment and management of protected areas. These guidelines aim to build an understanding of protected area tourism, and its management. They provide both a theoretical structure and practical guidelines for managers. The underlying aim is to ensure that tourism contributes to the purposes of protected areas and does not undermine them.

The present study was designed to determine the factors affecting cotton productivity in Punjab province of Pakistan. The factors considered in the study are livestock assets in addition to other conventional factors including farm inputs and socioeconomic characteristics. A Cobb Douglas production function was estimated. Impacts of livestock assets on various farm characteristics like share of Bt cotton, cotton area and dummy for good quality of land are considered. Findings of the study show that variables namely pesticide, irrigation, farming experience, cotton area, dummy for good quality land, dummy for off-farm income, dummy for livestock units, interaction terms of livestock units with pesticide and ratio of Bt cotton area to area under cotton are significantly related with cotton yield. Combined effect of livestock and pesticide use on cotton productivity is 0.38 percent whereas joint contribution of livestock and share of Bt cotton in cotton yield is 0.01 percent. Integrating livestock in farming system can have additional benefit of higher crop productivity and thereby improve farm income and livelihood of rural community.

In the present study, determinants of radish yield in two districts of Punjab, Pakistan were ascertained using Cobb Douglas type production function. Data were gathered from Sheikhupura and Sahiwal and a total of 97 radish growers were interviewed from these districts using purposive sampling technique during 2003. Results indicated that seed, fertilizer, labour hours used for weeding and education were positively related with radish yield whereas non-availability of quality seed and plant protection were negatively related with radish yield. Educating the vegetable growers to adopt modern technology and use appropriate inputs would increase radish yield to a great extent.

Determinants of risk attitude and risk perception under changing climate among farmers in Punjab, Pakistan

PurposeThe purpose of the current study is to investigate the role network value of firm on the relationship between firm strategic initiatives on firm performance by managing the market antecedents including user's expectations, user's coordination and user's compatibility.Design/methodology/approachThe current study uses secondary date of telecom industry of Pakistan, India and China. The data obtained were later subjected to the analysis using CASUALMED procedures of statistical analysis software (SAS).FindingsThe findings from the study projected that strategic drivers played an important role in leveraging the firms' performance. The results also confirm that in order to increase the firm performance, the network value of firms' plays a very crucial role.Research limitations/implicationsDespite making novel contribution, the present study has few limitations, need researchers' attention to be explained in the future, which includes narrow population size, not being able to work on indirect network effects and the theoretical explanation of behavioral antecedents of network value.Practical implicationsThe present research have potential applications for managers of telecom industry, which in turn would help them to develop the strategies that they could build to leverage their network value and firms' performance.Originality/valueThe current study has made a considerable contribution in the literature by proposing a model that adds to the theoretical foundation of strategic management of the firm. So, closely considering these insights would be helping for the firms to leverage its network value in mobile telecommunication industry.
