Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change

The link between protected areas and tourism is as old as the history of protected areas. Though the relationship is complex and sometimes adversarial, tourism is always a critical component to consider in the establishment and management of protected areas. These guidelines aim to build an understanding of protected area tourism, and its management. They provide both a theoretical structure and practical guidelines for managers. The underlying aim is to ensure that tourism contributes to the purposes of protected areas and does not undermine them.

Environmental and technical efficiency analysis in bitter gourd production

Better cotton is introduced with the aim of a reduction in the use of environmentally detrimental farm inputs in order to attain sustainable cotton production. The present study is designed to assess the environmental and economic effects of better cotton in Pakistan using panel data comprising of two cropping seasons, 2015 and 2016. Panel methods were used in the present study. Findings show that better cotton increases the gross margin by 37% and yield by 9%, whereas it results in decreasing seed rate by 6%, fertilizers by 7%, pesticides by 7%, and irrigation by 14%. Since better cotton involves more labor use due to higher yield, labor increases by 3%. The study concludes that better cotton is more economically and environmentally sustainable than conventional cotton. The study suggests that public private partnership will be a good strategy to diffuse better cotton technologies among the farming communities.

Impact of socio-economic and water access conditions on life satisfaction of rural farmers in Faisalabad district of Pakistan

The present study estimated the economic value of Kallar Kahar Lake in Pakistan. This is among the first-ever studies considering the impact of the visitors’ perception on the number of visits to the lake in South Asia. Individual travel cost method was employed. Variables on the perception of the visitors were significantly related to the number of visits to the recreational site. Results implied that improving environmental quality and other conditions of Kallar Kahar Lake could increase the number of visits made to the lake. Consumer surplus was US$18.76 per person per visit, and the total annual value of consumer surplus reached US$5.3 million. Low elasticity of demand for recreational site implied the feasibility of imposing the entrance fee. This study contributes its part by providing economic valuation of the benefits provided by Kallar Kahar to be useful for the policymakers and local authorities for efficient management.

Evaluating visitors’ travel demand and recreational values in Kallar Kahar Lake, Pakistan

This paper is an attempt to compare the efficiency between pure Islamic banks and Islamic bank windows of conventional banks. It also explains the role of Islamic banks in agriculture sector. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) was used to find out the efficiency. The results of this study suggest that overall efficiency of Islamic banking is increasing with the passage of time. The cost, allocative, scale and technical efficiencies of pure Islamic banks are higher than Islamic banking windows of conventional banks; however, income efficiency is higher in the case of Islamic bank windows. In agriculture sector, Islamic banking provides equal opportunities to all farm size groups with its unique products. Especially the small farmers can benefit from the products of to enhance the productivity of their farms.
