The use of standards for the measurement of photoluminescence quantum yields (QYs) in dilute solutions is reviewed. Only three standards can be considered well estab- lished. Another group of six standards has been investigated by several independent researchers. A large group of standards is frequently used in recent literature, but the valid- ity of these is less certain. The needs for future development comprise: (i) confirmation of the validity of the QY values of many commonly used standard materials, preferably in the form of SI traceable standards; (ii) extension of the set of standard materials to the UV and near-IR spectral ranges; and (iii) good standards or robust protocols for the measurements of low QYs.

Photoremovable Protecting Groups in Chemistry and Biology: Reaction Mechanisms and Efficacy

Modified oligonucleotides 3'-NHP(O)(O-)O-5' phosphoramidates were synthesized on a solid phase support. The phosphoramidate analogs were found to have significantly increased resistance toward phosphodiesterase digestion. Thermal dissociation experiments demonstrated that these compounds form more stable duplexes than phosphodiesters with complementary DNA and particularly RNA strands. Further, the phosphoramidate analogs can also form stable triplexes with double-stranded DNA target, where under similar conditions parent phosphodiester compounds failed to do so.

A new synthesis of 1,1,2,2,9,9,10,l0-octafluoro[2.2]paracyclophane (2) is reported. Easy preparation of gram quantities of 2 is accomplished by treatment of α,α'-dibromo-α,α,α',α'-tetrafluoroxylene with a complex low-valent form of Ti which is made by reduction of TiCl 4 with equimolar quantities of LiAlH 4 in THF. Use of high-dilution techniques is required for the reaction to be successful. The formation of 2 is believed to proceed via the reactive monomeric species α,α,α',α'-tetrafluoro-p-xylylene (4)
