Maximizing seedling and root tuber production in Polygonum multiflorum for use in ethnomedicine

The effects of water stress on the two year old Vinca majorVariegata were tested for proving the irrigation guidance for its application in the garden. The results showed that the water flood and the drought stress suppressed the plant growth. After treated with flooding for 13days, the qP, ETR, Fv'/Fm' and net photosynthetic rate were decreased, but the qN were increased and the plants were dead. The mid drought stress (the water content of soil were between 20 percent and 30 percent) slightly affected the growth of plant, which embodies in the slight decline of chlorophyll, qP, ETR, Fv'/Fm', Fv/Fm and qP, the ascend of net photosynthetic rate. Drought Stress badly affected the growth of plant, which embodies in the decline of chlorophyll, qP, ETR, Fv'/Fm', Fv/Fm, qP and net photosynthetic rate. The best irrigation for plant was the water content of soil between 20 percent and 30 percent, which does not affect the ornamental value of Robinia pseudoacacia and save the irrigation water. So the application of V. majorVariegata should avoid in the place for over 13 days water flood.

The Effect of Water Stress on the Physiology of Vinca major 'Variegata'

Urban agglomerations create extreme microclimates for plants, in which growth, development and survival means adaptation. Plantations expansions beyond the typical gardens to buildings, walls or other build structures were realized in many cities with a rigorous selection of plant species. Although the number of woody species well adapted to the urban environmental conditions is quite large, few species manage to grow and develop on the roofs. Two species - Vinca major ‘Variegata’ and Hedera helix, regularly used for this type of plantations in Bucharest, were selected to understand their mechanism of adaptation. A comparative study was conducted on these species, growing on a rooftop garden and at the ground level into a typical garden. Both species revealed considerable anatomical differences of the leaves. In addition, physiological determinations revealed a stronger intensity of photosynthesis, an intense transpiration and a lower respiration rate at plants grown in the roof garden.

Microstructures of roots,stems and leaves on Vinca major Linn and Vinca major Linn.cv.Variegata were investigated by means of plant anatomy in the present study.The result demonstrated that significant differences in anatomy had been observed between them.In Vinca major Linn,the vascular bundle of the stems arrayed in a uniform circle,however the number of four partial cells was larger and bulged the core in the vascular bundle of Vinca major Linn.cv Variegata.The root was five prototypes in Vinca major Linn,and the vascular bundle of root was six prototypes.The palisade tissue had only one layer and the petiole had two vascular bundles in Vinca major Linn.In Vinca major Linn.cv Variegata,the palisade tissue had two layers,the petioles had only one vascular bundle.Moreover,the characteristics of epidermis was similar between the two species,and stoma were investigated between the above and under epidermis of blade.Epidermis cell wall was straight,and the stoma was paracytic type.

Comparative Anatomy of Vegetative Organs of Vinca major and Vinca major.cv Variegata

The structure of Polygonum multiflorum root,stem,leaf and root tuber and its anthraquinones distribution were studied to provide a reference to study the accumulation regulation of its anthraquinones.The results showed that the primary and secondary structure of the root and stem and the leaf structure is similar to dicotyledon.The root tuber is composed of periderm,secondary phloem,abnormal vascular,secondary xylem,and primary xylem.The abnormal vascular is the kind of amphicribral vascular bundle.Its anthraquinones is mainly distributed in root tubers and the anthraquinones content in its stem,root and leaf is little.
