Notably, many significant breakthroughs for a new generation of supercapacitors have been reported in recent years, related to theoretical understanding, material synthesis and device designs. Herein, we summarize the state-of-the-art progress toward mechanisms, new materials, and novel device designs for supercapacitors. Firstly, fundamental understanding of the mechanism is mainly focused on the relationship between the structural properties of electrode materials and their electrochemical performances based on some in situ characterization techniques and simulations. Secondly, some emerging electrode materials are discussed, including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), MXenes, metal nitrides, black phosphorus, LaMnO3, and RbAg4I5/graphite. Thirdly, the device innovations for the next generation of supercapacitors are provided successively, mainly emphasizing flow supercapacitors, alternating current (AC) line-filtering supercapacitors, redox electrolyte enhanced supercapacitors, metal ion hybrid supercapacitors, micro-supercapacitors (fiber, plane and three-dimensional) and multifunctional supercapacitors including electrochromic supercapacitors, self-healing supercapacitors, piezoelectric supercapacitors, shape-memory supercapacitors, thermal self-protective supercapacitors, thermal self-charging supercapacitors, and photo self-charging supercapacitors. Finally, the future developments and key technical challenges are highlighted regarding further research in this thriving field.

Latest advances in supercapacitors: from new electrode materials to novel device designs.

In the last few decades, pharmaceuticals, credited with saving millions of lives, have emerged as a new class of environmental contaminant. These compounds can have both chronic and acute harmful effects on natural flora and fauna. The presence of pharmaceutical contaminants in ground waters, surface waters (lakes, rivers, and streams), sea water, wastewater treatment plants (influents and effluents), soils, and sludges has been well doccumented. A range of methods including oxidation, photolysis, UV-degradation, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, and adsorption has been used for their remediation from aqueous systems. Many methods have been commercially limited by toxic sludge generation, incomplete removal, high capital and operating costs, and the need for skilled operating and maintenance personnel. Adsorption technologies are a low-cost alternative, easily used in developing countries where there is a dearth of advanced technologies, skilled personnel, and available capital, and adsorption appears to be the most broadly feasible pharmaceutical removal method. Adsorption remediation methods are easily integrated with wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Herein, we have reviewed the literature (1990-2018) illustrating the rising environmental pharmaceutical contamination concerns as well as remediation efforts emphasizing adsorption.

Pharmaceuticals of Emerging Concern in Aquatic Systems: Chemistry, Occurrence, Effects, and Removal Methods.

Polyurethanes (PUs) are a class of versatile materials with great potential for use in different applications, especially based on their structure–property relationships. Their specific mechanical, physical, biological, and chemical properties are attracting significant research attention to tailoring PUs for use in different applications. Enhancement of the properties and performance of PU-based materials may be achieved through changes to the production process or the raw materials used in their fabrication or via the use of advanced characterization techniques. Clearly, modification of the raw materials and production process through proper methods can produce PUs that are suitable for varied specific applications. The present study aims to shed light on the chemistry, types, and synthesis of different kinds of PUs. Some of the important research studies relating to PUs, including their synthesis method, characterization techniques, and research findings, are comprehensively discussed. Herein, recent advances in new types of PUs and their synthesis for various applications are also presented. Furthermore, information is provided on the environmental friendliness of the PUs, with a specific emphasis on their recyclability and recoverability.

Progress in discovery and structural design of color conversion phosphors for LEDs

A mechanistic study of ciprofloxacin removal by kaolinite.

A series of single-composition trichromatic white-emitting Sr3.5Y6.5O2(PO4)1.5(SiO4)4.5 (SYPSO) : Ce3+, Tb3+, Mn2+ phosphors were investigated, and the crystal structures and luminescence properties, especially the energy transfer behavior, are discussed in detail. It was found that the SYPSO : Ce3+, Tb3+, Mn2+ phosphors can yield three major RGB emission bands in the visible spectral region: blue emission from the 5d–4f transitions of Ce3+, green emission from the 5D4–7FJ (J = 3, 4, 5, 6) transitions of Tb3+ and red emission from the 4T1(4G)–6A1(6S) transition of Mn2+ ions. The energy transfer process between Ce3+ and Tb3+ and between Ce3+ and Mn2+ have both been demonstrated to be a resonant type via a dipole–dipole mechanism, and the energy transfer (ET) efficiency, as well as the critical distance, have also been estimated. Based on the energy transfer, the emission colors of the obtained phosphors can be tuned from blue to green/red, and eventually to white emission by controlling the doping content of the Tb3+/Mn2+ ions. A white light emitting-diodes (w-LEDs) lamp was finally fabricated using the present phosphor (with the composition of SYPSO : 0.05Ce3+, 0.25Tb3+, 0.25Mn2+), which exhibited a high color rendering index (Ra) of 89.95 at a correlated color temperature of 6189 K and CIE coordinates of (0.320, 0.318). These results suggested that the present phosphor is a potential single-component white-light phosphor for n-UV-pumped w-LED.
