Journal ArticleDOI

Charge effect on the photoinactivation of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria by cationic meso-substituted porphyrins

TL;DR: The complete inactivation of both bacterial strains with low light fluence means that the photodynamic approach can be applied to wastewater treatment under natural light conditions which makes this technology cheap and feasible in terms of the light source.
Journal ArticleDOI

Photodynamic inactivation of mammalian viruses and bacteriophages.

TL;DR: The aim of this review is to discuss and compare the present state of the art of mammalian viruses PDI with phage photoinactivation, with special focus on the most relevant mechanisms, molecular targets and factors affecting the viral inactivation process.
Journal ArticleDOI

Phage Therapy and Photodynamic Therapy: Low Environmental Impact Approaches to Inactivate Microorganisms in Fish Farming Plants

TL;DR: The aim of this review is to briefly present the typical fish farming diseases and their threats and discuss the present state of chemotherapy to inactivate microorganisms in fish farming plants as well as to examine the new environmentally friendly approaches to control fish infection namely phage therapy and photodynamic antimicrobial therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Efficiency of phage cocktails in the inactivation of Vibrio in aquaculture

TL;DR: The use of phage cocktails of two or three phages increased the efficiency ofphage therapy against Vibrio (more efficient and faster bacterial inactivation), delaying the development of resistance by the bacteria and the use of VIBrio phages with high burst sizes and short lytic cycles also increases the efficiencyof phage therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Photodynamic inactivation of multidrug-resistant bacteria in hospital wastewaters: influence of residual antibiotics.

TL;DR: It can be concluded that PDI has potential to be an effective alternative for the inactivation of MDR bacteria in hospital wastewaters and that the presence of antibiotics may enhance its effectiveness.
