Integrating Communication and Engineering Education: A Look at Curricula, Courses, and Support Systems
Julie Dyke Ford,Linda Ann Riley +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors point out the ways in which engineering and communication disciplines can work together to ensure the ABET criterion that encompasses effective communication is represented in engineering curricula.
Journal ArticleDOI
Blurring Boundaries between Technical Communication and Engineering: Challenges of a Multidisciplinary, Client-Based Pedagogy
TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss a study of their initial semester matching technical communication students with teams of engineers in a capstone, client-based design course and suggest that academic and professional settings could do more to address the types of challenges identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Crafting a Public Image: An Empirical Study of the Ethics of Ghostwriting
Linda Ann Riley,Stuart C. Brown +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine several positions regarding the ethics of ghostwriting and discuss an empirical study testing three major positions found in ghostwriting literature and find that respondents do recognize the use of speechwriters by certain individuals in certain circumstances.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Teaming engineers and technical communicators in interdisciplinary classrooms: working with and against compartmentalized knowledge
TL;DR: The authors argue that the most successful teams typically depend heavily on aspects often considered in science and engineering to be "soft skills": flexibility in handling differences, interpersonal strengths in interacting with others, positive attitudes toward collaboration, openness to alternative ideas and approaches, an ability to withhold decisions while various methods and alternatives are considered and weighed.
Visioning Transition: A Framework For Collaborative Change

TL;DR: The A.D. Welliver Faculty Fellowship Program at the Boeing Company as discussed by the authors has been widely recognized as an innovative example of university/industry partnership and has been used to train engineers for a global, integrated and multi-disciplinary nature.
