Acute Skeletal Muscle Wasting in Critical Illness
Zudin Puthucheary,J Rawal,Mark J. W. McPhail,Mark J. W. McPhail,Bronwen Connolly,Bronwen Connolly,Gamunu Ratnayake,Pearl Chan,Nicholas S Hopkinson,Rahul Phadke,Tracy Dew,Paul S. Sidhu,Cristiana P. Velloso,John Seymour,Chibeza C. Agley,Anna Selby,Marie C. Limb,Lindsay M. Edwards,Kenneth Smith,Anthea Rowlerson,Michael J. Rennie,John Moxham,John Moxham,Stephen D. R. Harridge,Nicholas Hart,Nicholas Hart,Hugh Montgomery +26 more
TL;DR: A comprehensive prospective characterization of skeletal muscle wasting, defining the pathogenic roles of altered protein synthesis and breakdown was performed and skeletal muscle loss was determined through serial ultrasound measurement.
Journal ArticleDOI
Regulation of human metabolism by hypoxia-inducible factor
Federico Formenti,Dumitru Constantin-Teodosiu,Yaso Emmanuel,Jane Cheeseman,Keith L. Dorrington,Lindsay M. Edwards,Sandy M. Humphreys,Terence R.J. Lappin,Mary Frances McMullin,C. J. McNamara,Wendy Mills,John R. Murphy,David O'Connor,Melanie J. Percy,Peter J. Ratcliffe,Thomas G. Smith,M. Treacy,Keith N. Frayn,Paul L. Greenhaff,Fredrik Karpe,Kieran Clarke,Peter A. Robbins +21 more
TL;DR: Although CP is relatively subtle disorder, this study reveals a striking regulatory role for HIF on metabolism during exercise in humans, which has significant implications for the development of therapeutic approaches targeting the HIF pathway.
Journal ArticleDOI
A high-fat diet impairs cardiac high-energy phosphate metabolism and cognitive function in healthy human subjects
Cameron J. Holloway,Lowri E. Cochlin,Yaso Emmanuel,Andrew J. Murray,Ion Codreanu,Lindsay M. Edwards,Cezary Szmigielski,Damian J. Tyler,Nicholas S Knight,Brian K. Saxby,Bridget Lambert,Campbell H. Thompson,Stefan Neubauer,Kieran Clarke +13 more
TL;DR: Raising plasma free fatty acids decreased myocardial PCr/ATP and reduced cognition, which suggests that a high-fat diet is detrimental to heart and brain in healthy subjects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Host-Microbial Interactions in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
Philip L. Molyneaux,Saffron A.G. Willis-Owen,Michael J. Cox,Phillip James,Steven Cowman,Michael R. Loebinger,Andrew D Blanchard,Lindsay M. Edwards,Carmel Stock,Cécile Daccord,Elisabetta A. Renzoni,Athol U. Wells,Miriam F. Moffatt,William O.C.M. Cookson,Toby M. Maher +14 more
TL;DR: Integrated analysis of the host transcriptome and microbial signatures demonstrated an apparent host response to the presence of an altered or more abundant microbiome in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, suggesting that the bacterial communities of the lower airways may act as persistent stimuli for repetitive alveolar injury in IPF.
