Impacts of a changing environment on marginal coral reefs in the Tropical Southwestern Atlantic
Marcelo de Oliveira Soares,Marcelo de Oliveira Soares,Sergio Rossi,Sergio Rossi,Anne Larisse Alves Rebouças Gurgel,Caroline Costa Lucas,Tallita Cruz Lopes Tavares,Beatriz Diniz,Caroline Vieira Feitosa,Emanuelle Fontenele Rabelo,Pedro Henrique Cipresso Pereira,Ruy Kenji Papa de Kikuchi,Zelinda M.A.N. Leão,Igor C. S. Cruz,Pedro Bastos de Macedo Carneiro,Lorenzo Alvarez-Filip +15 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the known effects of multiple pressures on the Brazilian reefs and argue that it is essential to alleviate the main local and regional human impacts and to adopt resilient-based management strategies at local and global scales to protect the low functional redundancy and higher endemism of these unique marginal coral reefs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Two decades of carbonate budget change on shifted coral reef assemblages: are these reefs being locked into low net budget states?
TL;DR: It is found that despite fundamental benthic ecological changes, these ecologically shifted coral assemblages have exhibited a modest but significant increase in their net carbonate budgets over the past 15 years, however, contrary to expectations this trend was driven by a decrease in erosion pressure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Community Structure of Scleractinian Corals outside Protected Areas in Cozumel Island, Mexico
TL;DR: In this article, an analysis of zooxanthellate coral community structure in six sites of the eastern and northwestern coasts of Cozumel, and to compare them with the status of the reefs already under federal management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Does reef architectural complexity influence resource availability for a large reef-dwelling invertebrate?
Enrique Lozano-Álvarez,Nelia Luviano-Aparicio,Fernando Negrete-Soto,Cecilia Barradas-Ortiz,Sergio Aguíñiga-García,Piedad S. Morillo-Velarde,Lorenzo Alvarez-Filip,Patricia Briones-Fourzán +7 more
TL;DR: No apparent effects of architectural complexity, at least to the degree observed in the authors' less complex patch, on density, condition, or trophic level of P .
Journal ArticleDOI
Functional potential of coral assemblages along a typical Eastern Tropical Pacific reef tract
Rafael A. Cabral-Tena,Andrés López-Pérez,Lorenzo Alvarez-Filip,F. Javier González-Barrios,Luis E. Calderon-Aguilera,Cuauhtémoc Aparicio-Cid +5 more
TL;DR: The Reef Functional Index (RFI) is calculated, which estimates the species-specific functional contribution of the corals in reef systems by integrating their capacity to create complex three-dimensional structures through calcium carbonate precipitation with morphological complexity, and highlights the vulnerability of these reefs.
