Nano carriers for drug transport across the blood–brain barrier
Xinming Li,John Tsibouklis,Tingting Weng,Buning Zhang,Guoqiang Yin,Feng Guangzhu,Yingde Cui,Irina N. Savina,Lyuba Mikhalovska,Susan Sandeman,Carol A. Howel,Sergey V. Mikhalovsky +11 more
TL;DR: This review provids a concise discussion of nano carriers for drug transport across the intact BBB, various forms of nanomaterials including inorganic/solid lipid/polymeric nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, quantum dots, nanogels, liposomes, micelles, dendrimers, polymersomes and exosomes are critically evaluated, and the future directions of this area are fully discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
In vitro host response assessment of biomaterials for cardiovascular stent manufacture
Matteo Santin,Lyuba Mikhalovska,Andrew W. Lloyd,Sergey V. Mikhalovsky,Louise Sigfrid,Stephen Paul Denyer,Susanna Field,Dennis G.Teer +7 more
TL;DR: Investigation of the host response to two of the materials used in stent manufacture, stainless steel and diamond-like carbon, showed that stainless steel induced a higher level of host response both in terms of platelet aggregation and macrophage activation, suggesting that carbon coatings may not be able to prevent restenosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antimicrobial activity of menthol modified nanodiamond particles
Volodymyr Turcheniuk,Volodymyr Turcheniuk,Viktoria Raks,Rahaf Issa,Ian Cooper,Peter J. Cragg,Roxana Jijie,Roxana Jijie,N. Dumitrascu,Lyuba Mikhalovska,Alexandre Barras,Vladimir Zaitsev,Vladimir Zaitsev,Rabah Boukherroub,Sabine Szunerits +14 more
TL;DR: The presence of menthol modified nanodiamond (ND-menthol) particles reduces biofilm formation more efficiently than free menthol, unmodified oxidized NDs and ampicillin, a commonly used antibiotic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fibrinogen adsorption and platelet adhesion to metal and carbon coatings.
Lyuba Mikhalovska,Matteo Santin,Stephen Paul Denyer,Andrew W. Lloyd,Dennis G.Teer,Susan L. Field,Sergey V. Mikhalovsky +6 more
TL;DR: It has been shown that the adsorption of fibrinogen to metal and carbon coatings and its post-adsorptive transition are dependent on both the material properties and the fibr inogen environment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Selective Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Disrupting Properties of Functionalized Diamond Nanoparticles Against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus
Manakamana Khanal,Viktoria Raks,Rahaf Issa,V. O. Chernyshenko,Alexandre Barras,José M. García Fernández,Lyuba Mikhalovska,Volodymyr Turcheniuk,Volodymyr Turcheniuk,Vladimir Zaitsev,Vladimir Zaitsev,Rabah Boukherroub,Aloysius Siriwardena,Ian Cooper,Peter J. Cragg,Sabine Szunerits +15 more
TL;DR: The antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of variously functionalized NDs against two common bacterial targets Gram‐negative bacterium Escherichia coli and Gram‐positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus are compared.
