The International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) is the international standard for the specification of ionospheric densities and temperatures. It was developed and is being improved-updated by a joint working group of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) and the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR). A new version of IRI is scheduled for release in the year 2000. This paper describes the most important changes compared to the current version of IRI: (1) an improved representation of the electron density in the region from the F peak down to the E peak including a better description of the F1 layer occurrence statistics and a more realistic description of the low-latitude bottomside thickness, (2) inclusion of a model for storm-time conditions, (3) inclusion of an ion drift model, (4) two new options for the electron density in the D region, and (5) an improved model for the topside electron temperatures. The outcome of the most recent IRI Workshops (Kuhlungsborn, 1997, and Nagoya, 1998) will be reviewed, and the status of several ongoing task force activities (e.g., efforts to improve the representation of electron and ion densities in the topside ionosphere and the inclusion of a plasmaspheric extension) will be discussed. A few typical IRI applications will be highlighted in section 6.

International reference ionosphere — past, present, and future: I. Electron density

Pilot observations were conducted at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, using an all-sky, image-intensified CCD camera system in conjunction with radar, ionosonde, and Global Positioning System (GPS) diagnostic systems during the periods January 19–28, 1993, and February 21 to August 22, 1995. These represent the first use of campaign mode operations of an imager at Arecibo for extended periods of F region observations. The January 1993 period (the so-called “10-day run”) yielded a rich data set of gravity wave signatures, perhaps the first case of direct imaging of thermospheric wave train properties in the F region. The 6-month 1995 campaign revealed two additional optical signatures of F region dynamics. A brightness wave in 6300 A passing rapidly through the field of view (FOV) has been linked to meridional winds driven by the midnight temperature maximum (MTM) pressure bulge. On May 3, 1995, during a period of geomagnetic activity, a 6300-A airglow depletion pattern entered the Arecibo FOV. Such effects represent the optical signatures of equatorial spread F instabilities that rise above the equator to heights near 2500 km, thereby affecting Arecibo's L = 1.4 flux tube.

Investigations of thermospheric-ionospheric dynamics with 6300-Å images from the Arecibo Observatory

International Reference Ionosphere: Past, present, and future. I - Electron density. II - Plasma temperatures, ion composition and ion drift

Current knowledge concerning the lower ionosphere (D- and E-region) is reviewed with an emphasis on new aspects of empirical results. Starting with an overview of experimental techniques and corresponding data bases, both regarding charged as well as the most relevant neutral constituents of this altitude range, the ionospheric variability is discussed both concerning regular (e.g. diurnal and seasonal) as well as irregular variations (e.g. driven by the variability of nitric oxide). We then turn to ‘new players’ in the lower ionosphere, i.e. charged aerosol particles such as mesospheric ice particles in noctilucent clouds or polar mesospheric summer echoes and meteor smoke particles originating from ablated meteoric matter. These species have received considerable attention in recent years, in part because it is speculated that observations of their properties might be useful for the detection of climate change signals. The available experimental data base regarding these species is reviewed and we show that there is now compelling evidence for the ubiquitous presence of these very heavy charge carriers throughout the lower ionosphere. While many fundamental details regarding these charged species are not yet completely understood, this emphasizes that charged aerosol particles may not be neglected in a comprehensive treatment of the lower ionospheric charge balance and related phenomena. Finally, we close with suggestions for future research.
