Journal ArticleDOI
In search for cross‐reactivity to immunophenotype equine mesenchymal stromal cells by multicolor flow cytometry
Catharina De Schauwer,Sofie Piepers,Gerlinde R. Van de Walle,Kristel Demeyere,Maarten Hoogewijs,Jan Govaere,Kevin Braeckmans,Ann Van Soom,Evelyne Meyer +8 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that this selected nine‐marker panel can be used for the adequate immunophenotyping of equine MSC.
Journal ArticleDOI
Scrotal insulation and its relationship to abnormal morphology, chromatin protamination and nuclear shape of spermatozoa in Holstein-Friesian and Belgian Blue bulls.
Mohammad Bozlur Rahman,Mohammad Bozlur Rahman,Leen Vandaele,Tom Rijsselaere,Dominiek Maes,Maarten Hoogewijs,A. Frijters,Jakomien Noordman,Ana Granados,Eric Dernelle,Mohammed Shamsuddin,John J. Parrish,Ann Van Soom +12 more
TL;DR: Sperm cells at the spermiogenic and meiotic stages of development are more susceptible to heat stress, together with subtle changes in sperm head shape, which can be detected by FHA but not by conventional semen analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Why doesn't conventional IVF work in the horse? The equine oviduct as a microenvironment for capacitation/fertilization
Bart Leemans,Bart M. Gadella,Tom A.E. Stout,Catharina De Schauwer,Hilde Nelis,Maarten Hoogewijs,Ann Van Soom +6 more
TL;DR: Developing a defined capacitating medium to support successful equine IVF will depend on identifying as yet uncharacterized capacitation triggers present in the oviduct.
Journal ArticleDOI
In vitro fertilizing capacity of frozen-thawed bull spermatozoa selected by single-layer (glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane) silane-coated silica colloidal centrifugation.
Mirjan Thys,Leen Vandaele,Jane M. Morrell,J. Mestach,A. Van Soom,Maarten Hoogewijs,Heriberto Rodriguez-Martinez +6 more
TL;DR: The present study investigated the fertilizing ability during in vitro fertilization (IVF) of frozen-thawed bovine spermatozoa following centrifugation through a single layer of glycerolpropylsilane (GS)-coated silica colloid with a species-specific formulation (patent applied for; treatment, T).
Journal ArticleDOI
Expression and putative function of fibronectin and its receptor (integrin α5β1) in male and female gametes during bovine fertilization in vitro
Mirjan Thys,Hans Nauwynck,Dominiek Maes,Maarten Hoogewijs,Dries Vercauteren,Tom Rijsselaere,Herman W. Favoreel,Ann Van Soom +7 more
TL;DR: The main inhibitory effect of exogenously supplemented Fn was located at the sperm-oolemma binding, with a (concurrent) effect on fusion, and this can be attributed to the binding of Fn to spermatozoa at the equatorial segment, as shown by means of Alexa Fluor 488-conjugated Fn.
