Local mussels, Perna viridis, were transplanted from a relatively clean site to various polluted sites in Hong Kong. After a 30-day field exposure, different antioxidant parameters including glutathione S transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), NADPH DT-diaphorase (DT-d), glutathione (GSH) and lipid peroxidation were quantified, and tissue concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) as well as a total of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with potential carcinogenicity were determined for individual mussels. Results indicated that: (1) tissue concentrations of B[a]P and total PAHs from the same site were highly variable; (2) gill SOD, DT-d and lipid peroxidation showed no response to tissue pollutants: (3) the majority of the antioxidant parameters were induced by increasing tissue pollutant concentrations; and (4) amongst the various parameters, oxyradical scavenger GSH [ best correlated with tissue concentrations of pollutants.

Fish scale morphology can serve as a reliable pollution bioindicator. The effect of pesticide on scales of freshwater fish Ctenopharyngodon idellus was studied using scanning electron microscopy at various exposure periods (15, 30 and 60 days) at different sublethal concentrations (1.44 µg/l and 2.41 µg/l) of organophosphate, chlorpyrifos. The fish exposed to the toxicant showed significant alterations such as damaged radii, focus, circuli and severely damaged lepidonts. The intensity of scale damage was found to be toxicant concentration and exposure period dependent and also prolonged exposure to the pesticide damage the fish scales severely.

Ultrastructural alterations in scales of Ctenopharyngodon idellus (Cuvier & Valenciennes) induced by chlorpyrifos: a promising tool as bioindicator of pesticide pollution

We evaluated structural modifications in the branchial architecture of grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella , chronically exposed to chlorpyrifos (an organophosphate) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Static renewal tests were conducted for 96 h to determine the LC 50 of chlorpyrifos to the fish. Physicochemical analysis of water was done using standard methods. To assess the effect of chronic toxicity, fish were exposed to two sublethal concentrations (1.44 µg/L and 2.41 µg/L) of chlorpyrifos for 15, 30 and 60 days, after which gills were examined by SEM, which revealed changes in gill ultrastructure. Branchial alterations included distorted secondary lamellae in the form of curling and shortening, erosion in a few primary filaments and a wrinkled and denuded epithelial surface. Excessive mucosal openings (mucoid hyperplasia) on the surface were observed in the gills of fish exposed to both concentrations of chlorpyrifos. Alteration in the microridge pattern of pavement cells and cracks on the gill rakers were also observed, and the intensity of the damage was found to be directly related to the toxicant concentration and exposure period. The present study revealed that the assessment of surface morphology can serve as a novel bioindicator of pollution, disease and toxicity.

SEM study of ultrastructural changes in branchial architecture of Ctenopharyngodon idella (Cuvier & Valenciennes) exposed to chlorpyrifos

In this paper a hybrid approach of BBO and BCO technique is used to find the shortest path from source to the target point. The input data is a red band satellite image. In this image there are no prior paths and we don't have any prior information about the area. So path planning is a key factor to find out the optimized path which includes terrain mapping, obstacle detection and avoidance, and goal seeking in crosscountry using a hybrid approach of BBO and BCO techniques of Swarm Intelligence. In this hybrid approach Biogeography Based Optimization (BBO) is used for path extraction and obstacle detection from the red satellite image, morphological operation is used for smooth image and Bee Colony Optimization (BCO) algorithm is used for obstacle avoidance and shortest safe path from source to the target.

Shortest Path Finding in country using Hybrid approach of BBO and BCO

Oxalate, a natural occurring substance, normally found in some plant parts and humans. The name oxalic acid (ethanedioic acid) which, now days called oxalate has been derived from the plant oxalis (wood sorrel). The most prominent form of oxalate, Calcium oxalate crystals, are extensive both in flowering monocotyledons and dicotyledons with shapes of Raphide, Styloid and Druse. Several forms of alkali and alkaline-earth oxalates like the sandstone whewellite, caoxite etc. are found in atmosphere, food, plants, fungi and other biological systems. As a mediator of Krebs citric acid cycle, the human body assimilate oxaloacetate which consequently hydrolyze to oxalate. Moreover, Oxalate salts, being badly soluble at intestinal pH are recognized to cut down calcium absorption resulting in diseases such as Rickets and Osteomalacia. Ingestion of 5–15 g of oxalic acid can be fatal to the humans. This chapter begins with an introduction to oxalate, its distribution in nature and the main sources that are the basis for its availability. It then covers myriad of tests: ion chromatography, gas chromatography, high-performance fluid chromatograph, enzymatic process, capillary electrophoresis and chemiluminescence. The effect of processing on oxalate via fermentation, baking, frying, boiling, soaking, germination, roasting and freezing are also presented.
