Journal ArticleDOI
Oral squamous cell carcinoma: histologic risk assessment, but not margin status, is strongly predictive of local disease-free and overall survival.
Margaret Brandwein-Gensler,Miriam S. Teixeira,Carol M. Lewis,Bryant Lee,Linda Rolnitzky,Johannes J. Hille,Eric M. Genden,Mark L. Urken,Beverly Y. Wang +8 more
TL;DR: It is found that administration of adjuvant radiation therapy is associated with increased local disease-free survival for high-risk patients only and not low-risk or intermediate- risk patients, while margin status was not associated with LR or OS.
Journal ArticleDOI
Low-Level Expression of MicroRNAs let-7d and miR-205 Are Prognostic Markers of Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Geoffrey Childs,Melissa Fazzari,Gloria Kung,Nicole Kawachi,Margaret Brandwein-Gensler,Michael Steven McLemore,Quan Chen,Robert D. Burk,Richard V. Smith,Michael B. Prystowsky,Thomas J. Belbin,Nicolas F. Schlecht +11 more
TL;DR: It is shown that miRNA expression levels can be used as prognostic markers of head and neck cancer and low levels of hsa-miR205 are significantly associated with loco-regional recurrence independent of disease severity at diagnosis and treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Surgical margins in head and neck cancer: A contemporary review
Michael L. Hinni,Alfio Ferlito,Margaret Brandwein-Gensler,Robert P. Takes,Carl E. Silver,William H. Westra,Raja R. Seethala,Juan P. Rodrigo,June Corry,Carol R. Bradford,Jennifer L. Hunt,Primož Strojan,Kenneth O. Devaney,Douglas R. Gnepp,Dana M. Hartl,Luiz Paulo Kowalski,Alessandra Rinaldo,Leon Barnes +17 more
TL;DR: Fundamental issues relating to the basic definition of margin adequacy, uniform reporting standards for margins, optimal method of specimen dissection, and the role of intraoperative frozen section evaluation, require further clarification and standardization.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human Papillomavirus in Non-Oropharyngeal Head and Neck Cancers: A Systematic Literature Review
TL;DR: The published data strongly support the need for studies on patients with oral and laryngeal carcinomas that will be powered to find any differences in clinical outcome with respect to HR-HPV and p16 overexpression and suggest an association between HPV and certain salivary gland neoplasms.
Journal ArticleDOI
A comparison of clinically utilized human papillomavirus detection methods in head and neck cancer
Nicolas F. Schlecht,Margaret Brandwein-Gensler,Gerard J. Nuovo,Maomi Li,Anne Dunne,Nicole Kawachi,Richard V. Smith,Richard V. Smith,Robert D. Burk,Michael B. Prystowsky +9 more
TL;DR: Compared with a gold standard HPV-PCR assay, HPV detection by in situ hybridization was less accurate for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma on tissue microarrays than p16 immunohistochemistry and further testing is warranted before these assays should be recommended for clinical HPV detection.
