Inferring a Population Structure for Staphylococcus epidermidis from Multilocus Sequence Typing Data
Maria Miragaia,Jonathan C. Thomas,Isabel Couto,Mark C. Enright,H. de Lencastre,H. de Lencastre +5 more
TL;DR: Examination of the sequence changes at MLST loci during clonal diversification showed that recombination gives rise to new alleles approximately twice as frequently as point mutations, suggesting that S. epidermidis has a population with an epidemic structure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Improved Multilocus Sequence Typing Scheme for Staphylococcus epidermidis
Jonathan C. Thomas,Miguel R. Vargas,Maria Miragaia,Sharon J. Peacock,Gordon L. Archer,Mark C. Enright +5 more
TL;DR: This improved MLST scheme for Staphylococcus epidermidis gave 31 sequence types and 5 clonal complexes, whereas the other schemes delineate 16 to 24 STs and 1 to 3 CCs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of clinical staphylococcal isolates from humans by internal transcribed spacer PCR.
Isabel Couto,Sandro F. F. Pereira,Maria Miragaia,Ilda Santos Sanches,Hermínia de Lencastre,Hermínia de Lencastre +5 more
TL;DR: ITS-PCR proved to be a valuable alternative for the identification of staphylococci, offering, within the same response time and at lower cost, higher reliability than the currently available commercial systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
High genetic diversity among community-associated Staphylococcus aureus in Europe: results from a multicenter study.
Joana Rolo,Maria Miragaia,Agata Turlej-Rogacka,Joanna Empel,Ons Bouchami,Nuno A. Faria,Ana Tavares,Waleria Hryniewicz,Ad C. Fluit,Hermínia de Lencastre,Hermínia de Lencastre +10 more
TL;DR: The results imply that CA-MRSA origin, epidemiology and population structure in Europe is very dissimilar from that of USA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecological Overlap and Horizontal Gene Transfer in Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
Guillaume Méric,Maria Miragaia,Mark de Been,Koji Yahara,Koji Yahara,Ben Pascoe,Leonardos Mageiros,Jane Mikhail,Llinos G. Harris,Thomas S. Wilkinson,Joana Rolo,Sarah Lamble,James E. Bray,Keith A. Jolley,William P. Hanage,Rory Bowden,Martin C. J. Maiden,Dietrich Mack,Hermínia de Lencastre,Hermínia de Lencastre,Edward J. Feil,Jukka Corander,Samuel K. Sheppard +22 more
TL;DR: A comparative analysis of 324 S. aureus and S. epidermidis genomes provided a context for considering the nature of recombinational boundaries between these ecologically similar staphylococcal species and, the selective forces that influence realized recombination between these species.
