TL;DR: Neonatal AKI is a common and independent risk factor for mortality and longer hospital stay, and data suggest that neonates may be impacted by AKI in a manner similar to pediatric and adult patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neonatal Kidney Size and Function in Preterm Infants: What Is a True Estimate of Glomerular Filtration Rate?
Carolyn Abitbol,Wacharee Seeherunvong,Marta G. Galarza,Chryso Katsoufis,Denise Francoeur,Marissa DeFreitas,Alcia Edwards-Richards,Vimal Master Sankar Raj,Jayanthi Chandar,Shahnaz Duara,Salih Yasin,Gaston Zilleruelo +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors distinguish between cystatin C (CysC) and creatinine (Cr) as markers of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in preterm infants and correlate eGFR with total kidney volume (TKV) as a surrogate of nephron mass.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessment of kidney function in preterm infants: lifelong implications.
TL;DR: This educational review will highlight the historical and contemporary references that establish a basic understanding of measurements of kidney function in the neonate and its relevance for the life of an individual.
Journal ArticleDOI
Optimizing the AKI definition during first postnatal week using Assessment of Worldwide Acute Kidney Injury Epidemiology in Neonates (AWAKEN) cohort.
David J. Askenazi,Carolyn Abitbol,Louis Boohaker,Russell Griffin,Rupesh Raina,Joshua Dower,T. Keefe Davis,Patricio E. Ray,Sofia Perazzo,Marissa DeFreitas,Lawrence S. Milner,Namasivayam Ambalavanan,F. Sessions Cole,Erin Rademacher,Michael Zappitelli,Maroun J. Mhanna +15 more
TL;DR: The optimal absolute, percent, and maximum SCr thresholds that provide the highest mortality area under curve (AUC) and specificity for different GA groups and improves outcome prediction are determined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Renin Angiotensin System Blocker Fetopathy: A Midwest Pediatric Nephrology Consortium Report
Shahid Nadeem,Shireen Hashmat,Marissa DeFreitas,Katherine D. Westreich,Ibrahim F. Shatat,David T. Selewski,Ali Mirza Onder,Myra Chiang,Donald J. Weaver,Julia Steinke,John Barcia,Joel D. Hernandez,Guillermo Hidalgo,Susan E. Ingraham,Carolyn Abitbol,Cynthia G. Pan,Larry A. Greenbaum +16 more
TL;DR: RAS blocker fetopathy continues to be a cause of considerable morbidity, with more severe renal manifestations associated with exposure after the first trimester, and clinicians should emphasize the risk of fetopathy when prescribing RAS blockers to women of childbearing age.
