Multicolony tracking reveals the winter distribution of a pelagic seabird on an ocean basin scale
Morten Frederiksen,Børge Moe,Francis Daunt,Richard A. Phillips,Robert T. Barrett,Maria I. Bogdanova,Thierry Boulinier,John W. Chardine,Olivier Chastel,Lorraine S. Chivers,Signe Christensen-Dalsgaard,Céline Clément-Chastel,Kendrew Colhoun,Robin Freeman,Anthony J. Gaston,Jacob González-Solís,Aurélie Goutte,David Grémillet,Tim Guilford,Gitte Høj Jensen,Yuri Krasnov,Svein-Håkon Lorentsen,Mark L. Mallory,Mark Newell,Bergur Olsen,Deryk N. Shaw,Harald Steen,Hallvard Strøm,Geir Helge Systad,Thorkell Lindberg Thórarinsson,Tycho Anker-Nilssen +30 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors tracked adults from colonies throughout the Atlantic range over the non-breeding season using light-based geolocation, and estimated the size and composition of wintering populations using information on breeding population size.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seasonal interactions in the black-legged kittiwake, Rissa tridactyla : links between breeding performance and winter distribution
Maria I. Bogdanova,Francis Daunt,Mark Newell,Richard A. Phillips,Michael P. Harris,Sarah Wanless +5 more
TL;DR: It is shown that black-legged kittiwakes that experienced breeding failure left their colony in southeast Scotland earlier than successful breeders, and macro-scale segregation associated with breeding outcome is relevant to defining important wintering areas, in particular among declining species experiencing increasingly regular breeding failure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Microhabitat use and prey capture of a bottom-feeding top predator, the European shag, shown by camera loggers
Yutaka Watanuki,Francis Daunt,Akinori Takahashi,Mark Newell,Sarah Wanless,Katsufumi Sato,Nobuyuki Miyazaki +6 more
TL;DR: The flexible foraging strategy of European shags is highlighted and how image and dive data can be combined to improve the understanding of the factors influencing the foraging success of benthic feeders is illustrated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Do early warning indicators consistently predict nonlinear change in long‐term ecological data?
Sarah J. Burthe,Peter A. Henrys,Eleanor B. Mackay,Bryan M. Spears,Ronald Campbell,Laurence Carvalho,Bernard Dudley,Iain D. M. Gunn,David G. Johns,Stephen C. Maberly,Linda May,Mark Newell,Sarah Wanless,Ian J. Winfield,Stephen J. Thackeray,Francis Daunt +15 more
TL;DR: For early warning indicators to be effective tools for preventative management of ecosystem change, it is recommended that multivariate approaches of a suite of potential indicators are adopted, incorporating analyses of anthropogenic drivers and process-based understanding.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phenological trends and trophic mismatch across multiple levels of a North Sea pelagic food web
Sarah J. Burthe,Francis Daunt,Adam Butler,David A. Elston,Morten Frederiksen,David G. Johns,Mark Newell,Stephen J. Thackeray,Sarah Wanless +8 more
TL;DR: Trophic mismatch appears to be prevalent within the North Sea pelagic food web, suggesting that ecosystem functioning may be disrupted and trophic mismatching is occurring.
