Cosmology Intertwined: A Review of the Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Cosmology Associated with the Cosmological Tensions and Anomalies

It is well known that reverberation mapping of active galactic nuclei (AGN) reveals a relationship between AGN luminosity and the size of the broad-line region, and that use of this relationship, combined with the Doppler width of the broad emission line, enables an estimate of the mass of the black hole at the center of the active nucleus based on a single spectrum. An unresolved key issue is the choice of parameter used to characterize the line width, either FWHM or line dispersion (the square root of the second moment of the line profile). We argue here that use of FWHM introduces a bias, stretching the mass scale such that high masses are overestimated and low masses are underestimated. Here we investigate estimation of black hole masses in AGNs based on individual or "single epoch" observations, with a particular emphasis in comparing mass estimates based on line dispersion and FWHM. We confirm the recent findings that, in addition to luminosity and line width, a third parameter is required to obtain accurate masses and that parameter seems to be Eddington ratio. We present simplified empirical formulae for estimating black hole masses from the Hbeta 4861 A and C IV 1549 A emission lines. While the AGN continuum luminosity at 5100 A is usually used to predict the Hbeta reverberation lag, we show that the luminosity of the Hbeta broad component can be used instead without any loss of precision, thus eliminating the difficulty of accurately accounting for the host-galaxy contribution to the observed luminosity.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Estimating Masses of Black Holes in Quasars with Single-epoch Spectroscopy

We present reverberation mapping results for the Mg ii λ2800 Å broad emission line in a sample of 193 quasars at with photometric and spectroscopic monitoring observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project during 2014–2017. We find significant time lags between the Mg ii and continuum lightcurves for 57 quasars, and define a “gold sample” of 24 quasars with the most reliable lag measurements. We estimate false-positive rates for each lag that range from 1% to 24%, with an average false-positive rate of 11% for the full sample and 8% for the gold sample. There are an additional ∼40 quasars with marginal Mg ii lag detections, which may yield reliable lags after additional years of monitoring. The Mg ii lags follow a radius–luminosity relation with a best-fit slope that is consistent with , but with an intrinsic scatter of 0.36 dex that is significantly larger than found for the Hβ radius–luminosity relation. For targets with SDSS-RM lag measurements of other emission lines, we find that our Mg ii lags are similar to the Hβ lags and ∼2–3 times larger than the C iv lags. This work significantly increases the number of Mg ii broad-line lags and provides additional reverberation-mapped black hole masses, filling the redshift gap at the peak of supermassive black hole growth between the Hβ and C iv emission lines in optical spectroscopy.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Mg II Lag Results from Four Years of Monitoring

The broad Mg II line in quasars has distinct variability properties compared with broad Balmer lines: it is less variable, and usually does not display a "breathing" mode, the increase in the average cloud distance when luminosity increases. We demonstrate that these variability properties of Mg II can be reasonably well explained by simple Locally Optimally Emitting Cloud (LOC) photoionization models, confirming earlier photoionization results. In the fiducial LOC model, the Mg II-emitting gas is on average more distant from the ionizing source than the H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ gas, and responds with a lower amplitude to continuum variations. If the broad-line region (BLR) is truncated at a physical radius of $\sim 0.3$ pc (for a $10^{8.5}M_{\odot}$ BH accreting at Eddington ratio of 0.1), most of the Mg II flux will always be emitted near this outer boundary and hence will not display breathing. These results indicate that reverberation mapping results on broad Mg II, while generally more difficult to obtain due to the lower line responsivity, can still be used to infer the Mg II BLR size and hence black hole mass. But it is possible that Mg II does not have a well defined intrinsic BLR size-luminosity relation for individual quasars, even though a global one for the general population may still exist. The dramatic changes in broad H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ emission in the observationally-rare changing-look quasars are fully consistent with photoionization responses to extreme continuum variability, and the LOC model provides natural explanations for the persistence of broad Mg II in changing-look quasars defined on H$\alpha$/H$\beta$, and the rare population of broad Mg II emitters in the spectra of massive inactive galaxies.

Understanding Broad Mg II Variability in Quasars with Photoionization: Implications for Reverberation Mapping and Changing-look Quasars

We show that the Platinum gamma-ray burst (GRB) data compilation, probing the redshift range 0.553 ≤ z ≤ 5.0, obeys a cosmological-model-independent three-parameter Fundamental Plane (Dainotti) correlation and so is standardizable. While they probe the largely unexplored z ∼ 2.3-5 part of cosmological redshift space, the GRB cosmological parameter constraints are consistent with, but less precise than, those from a combination of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and Hubble parameter [H(z)] data. In order to increase the precision of GRB-only cosmological constraints, we exclude common GRBs from the larger Amati-correlated A118 data set composed of 118 GRBs and jointly analyse the remaining 101 Amati-correlated GRBs with the 50 Platinum GRBs. This joint 151 GRB data set probes the largely unexplored z ∼ 2.3-8.2 region; the resulting GRB-only cosmological constraints are more restrictive, and consistent with, but less precise than, those from H(z)  + BAO data.

Time Delay Measurement of Mg II Line in CTS C30.10 with SALT

We report 6 yr monitoring of a distant bright quasar CTS C30.10 (z = 0.90052) with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). We measured the rest-frame time-lag of $562\pm 2$ days between the continuum variations and the response of the Mg II emission line, using the Javelin approach. More conservative approach, based on five different methods, imply the time delay of $564^{+109}_{-71}$ days. This time delay, combined with other available measurements of Mg II line delay, mostly for lower redshift sources, shows that the Mg II line reverberation implies a radius-luminosity relation very similar to the one based on a more frequently studied H$\beta$ line.

Time Delay of Mg ii Emission Response for the Luminous Quasar HE 0435-4312: toward Application of the High-accretor Radius–Luminosity Relation in Cosmology

The Vera Rubin Observatory will provide an unprecedented set of time-dependent observations of the sky. The planned Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) operating for 10 years will provide dense lightcurves for thousands of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in Deep Drilling Fields (DDFs) and less dense lightcurves for millions of AGN. We model the prospects for measuring time delays for emission lines with respect to the continuum, using these data. We model the artificial lightcurves using Timmer-Koenig algorithm, we use the exemplary cadence to sample them, we supplement lightcurves with the expected contamination by the strong emission lines (Hbeta, Mg II and CIV as well as with Fe II pseudo-continuum and the starlight). We choose the suitable photometric bands appropriate for the redshift and compare the assumed line time delay with the recovered time delay for 100 statistical realizations of the light curves. We show that time delays for emission lines can be well measured from the Main Survey for the bright tail of the quasar distribution (about 15% of all sources) with the accuracy within 1 sigma error, for DDFs results for fainter quasars are also reliable when all 10 years of data are used. There are also some prospects to measure the time delays for the faintest quasars at the smallest redshifts from the first two years of data, and eventually even from the first season. The entire quasar population will allow obtaining results of apparently high accuracy but in our simulations, we see a systematic offset between the assumed and recovered time delay depending on the redshift and source luminosity which will not disappear even in the case of large statistics. Such a problem might affect the slope of the radius-luminosity relation and cosmological applications of quasars if simulations correcting for such effects are not performed.
