Journal ArticleDOI
The PRIME North America randomized double-blind clinical trial of olanzapine versus placebo in patients at risk of being prodromally symptomatic for psychosis. II. Baseline characteristics of the "prodromal" sample.
Tandy J. Miller,Robert B. Zipursky,Diana O. Perkins,Jean Addington,Scott W. Woods,Keith A. Hawkins,Ralph E. Hoffman,Adrian Preda,Irvin Epstein,D. Addington,Stacy R. Lindborg,E. Marquez,Mauricio Tohen,Alan Breier,Thomas H. McGlashan +14 more
TL;DR: The first double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial of an atypical neuroleptic medication is being conducted in symptomatic treatment-seeking patients meeting new diagnostic criteria for a putative prodromal syndrome, identifying them as being at high risk for developing psychosis in the near future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lithium Treatment and Risk of Suicidal Behavior in Bipolar Disorder Patients
Leonardo Tondo,Ross J. Baldessarini,John Hennen,Gianfranco Floris,Francesco Silvetti,Mauricio Tohen +5 more
TL;DR: Suicidal behavior was strongly associated with prior suicide attempts, more time depressed, and younger age or recent onset and lithium maintenance was associated with marked reduction of life-threatening suicidal acts, the number of which sharply increased after discontinuing lithium.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comorbidity in psychosis at first hospitalization.
Stephen M. Strakowski,Mauricio Tohen,Andrew L. Stoll,Gianni L. Faedda,Pierre V. Mayer,Meridith L. Kolbrener,Daniel C. Goodwin +6 more
TL;DR: Comorbidity is common and may be a useful predictor of the outcome of a first episode of psychosis, while those with medical comorbidities had fewer symptoms at discharge.
Journal ArticleDOI
An excitement subscale of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale.
Jean-Pierre Lindenmayer,Jean-Pierre Lindenmayer,Eileen Brown,Robert W. Baker,Leslie M. Schuh,Lixin Shao,Mauricio Tohen,Saeeduddin Ahmed,Virginia L. Stauffer +8 more
TL;DR: Factor analyses of the PANSS consistently uncovered an excitement factor including uncooperativeness, poor impulse control, excitement, and hostility items that may be useful in examining manic symptoms in studies where the addition of a scale specific to mania would be burdensome and where symptoms of excitement are part of the clinical presentation.
Journal ArticleDOI
The McLean–Harvard first-episode project: 6-month symptomatic and functional outcome in affective and nonaffective psychosis
Mauricio Tohen,Stephen M. Strakowski,Carlos A. Zarate,John Hennen,John Hennen,Andrew L. Stoll,Trisha Suppes,Gianni L. Faedda,Bruce M. Cohen,Priscilla Gebre-Medhin,Ross J. Baldessarini,Ross J. Baldessarini +11 more
TL;DR: Syndromal recovery was achieved by nearly one half of patients within 3 months of a first lifetime hospitalization for a psychotic illness, but functional recovery was not achieved by 6 months in nearly two thirds of patients who had attained syndromal Recovery.
