Journal ArticleDOI
Population structure of human gut bacteria in a diverse cohort from rural Tanzania and Botswana
Matthew E. B. Hansen,Meagan A. Rubel,Aubrey Bailey,Alessia Ranciaro,Simon Thompson,Simon Thompson,Michael Campbell,Michael Campbell,William Beggs,Jaanki R. Dave,Gaonyadiwe G. Mokone,Sununguko Wata Mpoloka,Thomas B. Nyambo,Christian C. Abnet,Stephen J. Chanock,Frederic D. Bushman,Sarah A. Tishkoff +16 more
TL;DR: Within two African populations, it is found that bacterial diversity per individual and within-population phylogenetic dissimilarity differs between Botswanan and Tanzanian populations, with Tanzania generally having higher diversity per Individual and lower Dissimilarity between individuals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lifestyle and the presence of helminths is associated with gut microbiome composition in Cameroonians
Meagan A. Rubel,Meagan A. Rubel,Arwa Abbas,Arwa Abbas,Louis J. Taylor,Andrew Connell,Ceylan Tanes,Kyle Bittinger,Valantine Ngum Ndze,Valantine Ngum Ndze,Julius Y. Fonsah,Eric Ngwang,André Essiane,Charles Fokunang,Alfred K. Njamnshi,Frederic D. Bushman,Sarah A. Tishkoff +16 more
TL;DR: Gut microbiome composition predicts ANTS positivity with 80% accuracy and Colonization with ANTS, in turn, is associated with elevated levels of TH1, TH2, and proinflammatory cytokines, indicating an association with multiple immune mechanisms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Regulatory element copy number differences shape primate expression profiles
Rebecca C. Iskow,Omer Gokcumen,Alexej Abyzov,Joanna Malukiewicz,Qihui Zhu,Ann T. Sukumar,Ann T. Sukumar,Athma A. Pai,Ryan E. Mills,Ryan E. Mills,Lukas Habegger,Darren A. Cusanovich,Meagan A. Rubel,George H. Perry,Mark Gerstein,Anne C. Stone,Yoav Gilad,Charles Lee +17 more
TL;DR: It is postulate that CNDs of these conserved sequences fine-tune developmental pathways by altering the levels of RNA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Population Genetic Structure of Traditional Populations in the Peruvian Central Andes and Implications for South American Population History
Graciela S. Cabana,Cecil M. Lewis,Raul Y. Tito,R. Alan Covey,Angela M. Cáceres,Augusto F. De La Cruz,Diana Durand,Genevieve Housman,Brannon I Hulsey,Gian Carlo Iannacone,Paul W López,Rolando Rocha Martínez,Angel Medina,Olimpio Ortega Dávila,Karla Paloma Osorio Pinto,Susan I Polo Santillán,Percy Rojas Domínguez,Meagan A. Rubel,Heather F. Smith,Silvia E Smith,Verónica Rubín de Celis Massa,Beatriz Lizárraga,Anne C. Stone +22 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that Peruvian Central Andean population structure cannot be parsimoniously explained as the sole outcome of combined Inca and Spanish policies on the region's population demography: highland populations differed from coastal and lowland populations in mtDNA genetic structure only; highland groups also showed strong evidence of female-biased gene flow and/or effective sizes relative to other Peruvian ecozones.
Journal ArticleDOI
Facing the facts: The Runx2 gene is associated with variation in facial morphology in primates
Terrence B. Ritzman,Nicholas E. Banovich,Nicholas E. Banovich,Kaitlin P. Buss,Jennifer Guida,Jennifer Guida,Meagan A. Rubel,Jennifer Pinney,Bao Khang,Matthew J. Ravosa,Anne C. Stone +10 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that, in primates, the QA ratio of the Runx2 gene may play a role in modulating facial size, but not facial orientation, and provide important clues about the genetic and developmental mechanisms that may underlie variation in facial form in primates.
