Global Biodiversity: Indicators of Recent Declines
Stuart H. M. Butchart,Stuart H. M. Butchart,Matt Walpole,Ben Collen,Arco J. van Strien,Jörn P. W. Scharlemann,Rosamunde E. A. Almond,Jonathan E. M. Baillie,Bastian Bomhard,Ciaire Brown,John F. Bruno,Kent E. Carpenter,Geneviève M. Carr,Janice Chanson,Anna M. Chenery,Jorge Csirke,Nick C. Davidson,Frank Dentener,Matthew N. Foster,Alessandro Galli,James N. Galloway,Piero Genovesi,Richard D. Gregory,Marc Hockings,Valerie Kapos,Valerie Kapos,Jean-Francois Lamarque,Fiona Leverington,Jonathan Loh,Melodie A. McGeoch,Louise McRae,Anahit Minasyan,Monica Hernández Morcillo,Thomasina E.E. Oldfield,Daniel Pauly,Suhel Quader,Carmen Revenga,John R. Sauer,Benjamin Skolnik,Dian Spear,Damon Stanwell-Smith,Simon N. Stuart,Andy Symes,Megan Tierney,Tristan D. Tyrrell,Jean Christophe Vié,Reg Watson +46 more
TL;DR: Most indicators of the state of biodiversity showed declines, with no significant recent reductions in rate, whereas indicators of pressures on biodiversity showed increases, indicating that the Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2010 targets have not been met.
Journal ArticleDOI
Linked indicator sets for addressing biodiversity loss
Tim H. Sparks,Stuart H. M. Butchart,Andrew Balmford,Leon Bennun,Damon Stanwell-Smith,Matt Walpole,Nicholas R. Bates,Bastian Bomhard,Graeme M. Buchanan,Anna M. Chenery,Ben Collen,Jorge Csirke,Robert J. Diaz,Nicholas K. Dulvy,Claire Fitzgerald,Valerie Kapos,Philippe Mayaux,Megan Tierney,Michelle Waycott,Louisa Wood,Rhys E. Green +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that explicitly linked sets of indicators offer a more useful framework than do individual indicators because the former are easier to understand, communicate and interpret to guide policy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use it or lose it: measuring trends in wild species subject to substantial use
Megan Tierney,Rosamunde E. A. Almond,Damon Stanwell-Smith,Louise McRae,Christoph Zöckler,Ben Collen,Matt Walpole,Jon Hutton,Steven de Bie +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented two indicators that could be used to track changes in populations of utilized vertebrate species and levels of harvest sustainability, based on sample data both at the global level and for the Arctic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mismatches in scale between highly mobile marine megafauna and marine protected areas
Melinda G. Conners,Nicholas B. Sisson,Pierre Didier Agamboue,Philip W. Atkinson,Alastair M. M. Baylis,Scott R. Benson,Barbara A. Block,Steven J. Bograd,Pablo Bordino,W. Don Bowen,Paul Brickle,I. Young,Victoria Warwick-Evans,Michael J. Weise,P. S. Wells,Bradley P. Wilkinson,Matthew J. Witt,Sara M. Maxwell +61 more
TL;DR: In this paper , a global tracking dataset from 36 species across five taxa, chosen to reflect the span of home range size in highly mobile marine megafauna, was used to show that most MPAs are too small to encompass complete home ranges of most species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Potential for redistribution of post‐moult habitat for Eudyptes penguins in the Southern Ocean under future climate conditions
Cara-Paige Green,David B. Green,Norman A. Ratcliffe,David R. Thompson,Mary-Anne Lea,Alastair M. M. Baylis,Alexander L. Bond,Charles-André Bost,Sarah Crofts,Richard J. Cuthbert,Jacob González-Solís,Kyle W. Morrison,Maud Poisblau,Klemens Pütz,Andrea Raya Rey,P. Ryan,Paul M. Sagar,Antje Steinfurth,Jean-Baptiste Thiebot,Megan Tierney,Thomas Otto Whitehead,Simon Wotherspoon,Mark A. Hindell +22 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors assessed the potential effects of climate change on Eudyptes penguins, which are the main avian consumers in the Southern Ocean in terms of biomass consumption.
