Journal Article
Effect of exercise on serum androgens in postmenopausal women: a 12-month randomized clinical trial.
Anne McTiernan,Anne McTiernan,Shelley S. Tworoger,Shelley S. Tworoger,Kumar B. Rajan,Kumar B. Rajan,Yutaka Yasui,Bess E. Sorenson,Cornelia M. Ulrich,Jessica Chubak,Jessica Chubak,Frank Z. Stanczyk,Deborah J. Bowen,Melinda L. Irwin,Rebecca E. Rudolph,Rebecca E. Rudolph,John D. Potter,John D. Potter,Robert S. Schwartz +18 more
TL;DR: Given similar levels of body fat loss, women randomized to a 12-month exercise intervention had greater declines in testosterone and free testosterone compared with controls, suggesting the association between exercise and breast cancer risk may be partly explained by the effects of exercise on these hormones.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of a yearlong, moderate-intensity exercise intervention on the occurrence and severity of menopause symptoms in postmenopausal women.
Erin J. Aiello,Yutaka Yasui,Shelley S. Tworoger,Shelley S. Tworoger,Cornelia M. Ulrich,Melinda L. Irwin,Deborah J. Bowen,Robert S. Schwartz,Claudia Kumai,John D. Potter,John D. Potter,Anne McTiernan,Anne McTiernan +12 more
TL;DR: Exercise does not seem to decrease the risk of having menopause symptoms in overweight, postmenopausal women not taking hormone therapy and may increase the severity of some symptoms in a small number of women.
Journal ArticleDOI
Randomized Trial Comparing Telephone Versus In-Person Weight Loss Counseling on Body Composition and Circulating Biomarkers in Women Treated for Breast Cancer: The Lifestyle, Exercise, and Nutrition (LEAN) Study
Maura Harrigan,Brenda Cartmel,Erikka Loftfield,Tara Sanft,Anees B. Chagpar,Yang Zhou,Mary C. Playdon,Fangyong Li,Melinda L. Irwin +8 more
TL;DR: Both in-person and telephone counseling were effective weight loss strategies, with favorable effects on C-reactive protein levels, and these findings may help guide the incorporation of weight loss counseling into breast cancer treatment and care.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparing metabolite profiles of habitual diet in serum and urine
Mary C. Playdon,Joshua N. Sampson,Amanda J. Cross,Rashmi Sinha,Kristin A. Guertin,Kristin A. Moy,Nathaniel Rothman,Melinda L. Irwin,Susan T. Mayne,Rachael Z. Stolzenberg-Solomon,Steven C. Moore +10 more
TL;DR: Urine samples offer a valid alternative or complement to serum for metabolite biomarkers of diet in large-scale clinical or epidemiologic studies, and metabolites associated with leafy green vegetables, sugar-sweetened beverages, citrus, added sugar, red meat, shellfish, desserts, and wine are found.
Journal ArticleDOI
Changes in insulin resistance indicators, IGFs, and adipokines in a year-long trial of aerobic exercise in postmenopausal women
Christine M. Friedenreich,Heather K. Neilson,Christy G. Woolcott,Anne McTiernan,Qinggang Wang,Rachel Ballard-Barbash,Charlotte Jones,Frank Z. Stanczyk,Rollin Brant,Yutaka Yasui,Melinda L. Irwin,Kristin L. Campbell,Margaret L. McNeely,Kristina H. Karvinen,Kerry S. Courneya +14 more
TL;DR: Previously inactive postmenopausal women who engaged in a moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise program experienced changes in insulin, HOMA-IR, leptin, and adiponectin/leptin that might decrease the risk for post menopausal breast cancer.
