An Introduction to MultiAgent Systems.

Agent-based modelling and simulation (ABMS) is a relatively new approach to modelling systems composed of autonomous, interacting agents. Agent-based modelling is a way to model the dynamics of complex systems and complex adaptive systems. Such systems often self-organize themselves and create emergent order. Agent-based models also include models of behaviour (human or otherwise) and are used to observe the collective effects of agent behaviours and interactions. The development of agent modelling tools, the availability of micro-data, and advances in computation have made possible a growing number of agent-based applications across a variety of domains and disciplines. This article provides a brief introduction to ABMS, illustrates the main concepts and foundations, discusses some recent applications across a variety of disciplines, and identifies methods and toolkits for developing agent models.

Conflict between Millennials and Baby Boomers appears frequently in public discourse. However, some have argued that these tensions are just media-generated controversy. We build on intergroup threat theory to explore the strength and nature of these tensions in three online studies: an exploratory survey, a preregistered correlational study, and a preregistered intervention (N = 1,714). We find that: (i) Millennials and Baby Boomers do express more animosity toward one another than toward other generations (Studies 1-3); (ii) whereas hostility toward Baby Boomers derives primarily from Millennials’ economic distress (realistic threat), Baby Boomers' hostility toward Millennials reflects fears of shifting worldviews (symbolic threat; Studies 2-3); (iii) highlighting the artificiality of generational labels reduces perceived threats and indirectly elicits more favorable outgroup attitudes (Study 3). These findings suggest that intergenerational tensions are real, rooted in asymmetrical concerns over symbolic versus realistic resources, and responsive to intervention.

Social simulation inherently involves social actors, at various levels, that make a wide range of decisions However, the decision mechanisms used by most research programs have often been intuitive, ad hoc and/or overly simplistic In contrast, in all cultures and times, diverse social actors are required to make decisions in complex circumstances For simulative decision mechanisms to be credible, the complex nature of social processes needs to be recognized and represented In order to create a more credible architecture for social simulation, the present paper introduces a rich, expressive decision process based upon a composite mechanism: polar hermeneutics
