Whole-genome sequencing of Chlamydia trachomatis isolates from persistently infected patients
Rachel Pitt,Ronan Doyle,Mette Theilgaard Christiansen,Patrick J Horner,Emma Hathorn,Sarah Alexander,Neil Woodford,Michelle J Cole,Judith Breuer +8 more
TL;DR: No genomic evidence was found to explain the differences in clinical outcome for these persistent infections with C. trachomatis and a mutation unrelated to antimicrobial susceptibility was found in an isolate from a persistently infected patient.
Journal ArticleDOI
No widespread dissemination of Chlamydia trachomatis diagnostic-escape variants and the impact of Neisseria gonorrhoeae positivity on the Aptima Combo 2 assay.
Michelle J Cole,Grahame S Davis,Helen Fifer,John Saunders,Magnus Unemo,Ronza Hadad,David J Roberts,Mohammed Abbas Fazal,Michaela Day,Jack Minshull,Peter Muir,Paddy Horner,Noel Gill,Kate Folkard +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a new variant of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) escaped detection in the Hologic Aptima Combo 2 (AC2) assay due to a C1515T mutation in the CT 23S rRNA target region.
Journal ArticleDOI
The European response to control and manage multi- and extensively drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Michelle J Cole,Michaela Day,Susanne Jacobsson,Andrew J Amato-Gauci,Gianfranco Spiteri,Magnus Unemo,Eszter Balla,Birgit H B van Benthem,Tatjana Nemeth Blažić,Maria José Borrego,Helen Fifer,Lilly Grothier,Steen Hoffmann,Gwenda Hughes,Catherine A Ison,Klaus Jansen,Robert D. Kirkcaldy,Otilia Mardh,Ndeindo Ndeikoundam,Teymur Noori,Raj Patel,Teodora Wi +21 more
TL;DR: The response plan to control and manage multidrug-resistant N. gonorrhoeae (MDR-NG) in Europe was published in 2012 and was updated in 2019 to further support European Union/European Economic Area countries in controlling and managing the threat of MDR/XDR- NG in Europe through further strengthening of AMR surveillance and clinical management including treatment failure monitoring.
Journal ArticleDOI
O03.2 Antimicrobial Resistance of Neisseria Gonorrhoeae in the European Union: Response to the Threat of Multidrug Resistant Gonorrhoea
Gianfranco Spiteri,Michelle J Cole,Magnus Unemo,Steen Hoffmann,Catherine A Ison,M J W van de Laar +5 more
TL;DR: Although the rapid increase and spread of decreased susceptibility to cefixime in 2010 has not continued, the detection of isolates with decreases susceptibility to ceftriaxone is concerning.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
O05.4 Does high-level azithromycin resistance emerge from low-level resistance in neisseria gonorrhoeae?
Michelle J Cole,Anthony Underwood,Kate Templeton,Jill Shepherd,Gwenda Hughes,Nazim Mustafa,Francesco Tripodo,Neil Woodford,Helen Fifer +8 more
TL;DR: It is hypothesised that azithromycin exposure provided selection pressure for one or two mutated copies of the 23S rRNA gene to recombine with wild-type copies, leading to 3 to 4 mutated copies in HL-AziR isolates.
