Journal ArticleDOI
Microalgae--novel highly efficient starch producers.
Irena Brányiková,Barbora Maršálková,Jiří Doucha,Tomáš Brányik,Kateřina Bišová,Vilém Zachleder,Milada Vítová +6 more
TL;DR: The addition of cycloheximide (1 mg/L), a specific inhibitor of cytoplasmic protein synthesis, and the effect of element limitation (nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus) were tested and the majority of the experiments were carried out in laboratory‐scale photobioreactors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Simultaneous flue gas bioremediation and reduction of microalgal biomass production costs
Irena Doušková,Jiří Doucha,K. Livansky,Jiri Machat,P. Novak,Dáša Umysová,Vilém Zachleder,Milada Vítová +7 more
TL;DR: Extending the flue gas treatment prior to the cultivation unit by a simple granulated activated carbon column led to an efficient absorption of gaseous mercury and to the algal biomass composition compliant with all the foodstuff legislation requirements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Accumulation of energy reserves in algae: From cell cycles to biotechnological applications
TL;DR: A review of the mechanisms that lead to an accumulation of exceptionally high levels of starch and lipids in algae can be found in this article, where a two-step procedure exploiting the effects of nutrient limitation and depletion, as well as the means and rationale for selecting appropriate strains, are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationship between starch and lipid accumulation induced by nutrient depletion and replenishment in the microalga Parachlorella kessleri.
Bruno Fernandes,José A. Teixeira,Giuliano Dragone,António A. Vicente,Shigeyuki Kawano,Kateřina Bišová,Pavel Přibyl,Vilém Zachleder,Milada Vítová +8 more
TL;DR: After transfer of cells into replenished mineral medium, growth, reproductive processes and chlorophyll content recovered within 2 days, while the content of both starch and lipids decreased markedly to 3 or less % of DW; this suggested that they were being used as a source of energy and carbon.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bioaccumulation and toxicity of selenium compounds in the green alga Scenedesmus quadricauda
Dáša Umysová,Milada Vítová,Irena Doušková,Kateřina Bišová,Monika Hlavová,Mária Čížková,Jiří Machát,Jiří Doucha,Vilém Zachleder +8 more
TL;DR: The selenium effect on the green alga Scenedesmus quadricauda was not only dose dependent, but the chemical form of the element was also crucial, indicating interference of Se with sulfur metabolism.
