The integration of sensors and communication technology in power systems, known as the smart grid, is an emerging topic in science and technology. One of the critical issues in the smart grid is its increased vulnerability to cyber-threats. As such, various types of threats and defense mechanisms are proposed in literature. This paper offers a bibliometric survey of research papers focused on the security aspects of Internet of Things (IoT) aided smart grids. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the very first bibliometric survey paper in this specific field. A bibliometric analysis of all journal articles is performed and the findings are sorted by dates, authorship, and key concepts. Furthermore, this paper also summarizes the types of cyber-threats facing the smart grid, the various security mechanisms proposed in literature, as well as the research gaps in the field of smart grid security .

Security aspects of Internet of Things aided smart grids: A bibliometric survey

Renewable energy resources are becoming the dominating element in power systems. Along with de-carbonization, they transform power systems into a more distributed, autonomous, bottom-up style one. We speak of Smart Grid and Microgrid when distributed energy resources take over. While being a means to improve technical and financial efficiency, planning, operations, and carbon footprint, it is these new technologies that also introduce new challenges. Reliability is one of them, deserving a new way of describing and assessing system and component reliability. This paper introduces a new reliability framework that covers these new elements in modern power systems. It can be seen that reliability assessment of modern power systems also requires introducing local reliability concepts as well as incorporating different electro-magnetic/mechanical stability issues.

The work presented intensively and extensively reviews the recent advances on the energy data management in smart grids, pricing modalities in a modernized power grid, and the predominant components of the smart grid. The paper thoroughly enumerates the recent advances in the area of network reliability. On the other hand, the reliance on smart cities on advanced communication infrastructure promotes more concerns regarding data integrity. Therefore, the paper dedicates a sub-section to highlight the challenges and the state-of-the-art of cybersecurity. Furthermore, highlighting the emerging developments in the pricing mechanisms concludes the review.

In this article, a broad overview of the current research trends in power-electronic innovations in cyber–physical systems (CPSs) is presented. The recent advances in semiconductor device technologies, control architectures, and communication methodologies have enabled researchers to develop integrated smart CPSs that can cater to the emerging requirements of smart grids, renewable energy, electric vehicles, trains, ships, the Internet of Things (IoT), and so on. The topics presented in this article include novel power-distribution architectures, protection techniques considering large renewable integration in smart grids, wireless charging in electric vehicles, simultaneous power and information transmission, multihop network-based coordination, power technologies for renewable energy and smart transformer, CPS reliability, transactive smart railway grid, and real-time simulation of shipboard power systems. It is anticipated that the research trends presented in this article will provide a timely and useful overview to the power-electronics researchers with broad applications in CPSs.

A Review of Current Research Trends in Power-Electronic Innovations in Cyber–Physical Systems

Power system operation considering an increasingly complex cyber infrastructure may be one of the key factors of the next generation power systems. The effective operation of a power system in a massively deployed cyber network environment will be affected by cyber network reliability. Therefore, it is vital not only to understand the operation of a cyber network and its reliability, but also it is critical to integrate the interdependency of cyber and power systems into power system planning and operations. This requires a three-layer approach to reliability modeling and evaluation. The cyber and power layers are interconnected by the information layer. The objective of this paper is to define the three-layer model and report a generalized framework for combined reliability modeling.

Following that, a cyber security intelligent defense system is proposed which will equip system operators a powerful tool to actively fight hackers and keep the power system secure and stable.
