Despite the progress made on renewable energy, oil and gas remains the world’s primary energy source. Meanwhile, large amounts of oil deposits remain unrecovered after application of traditional oil recovery methods. Chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has been adjudged as an efficient oil recovery technique to recover bypassed oil and residual oil trapped in the reservoir. This EOR method relies on the injection of chemicals to boost oil recovery. In this overview, an up-to-date synopsis of chemical EOR with detailed explanation of the chemicals used, and the mechanism governing their oil recovery application have been discussed. Challenges encountered in the application of the various conventional chemical EOR methods were highlighted, and solutions to overcome the challenges were proffered. Besides, the recent trend of incorporating nanotechnology and their synergistic effects on conventional chemicals stability and efficiency for EOR were also explored and analysed. Finally, laboratory results and field projects were outlined. The review of experimental studies shows that pore-scale mechanisms of conventional chemical EOR is enhanced by incorporating nanotechnology, hence, resulted in higher efficiency. Moreover, the use of ionic liquid chemicals and novel alkaline–cosolvent–polymer technology shows good potentials. This overview presents an extensive information about chemical EOR applications for sustainable energy production.

Experimental investigations were carried out to examine the adsorption equilibrium, isotherm, kinetic behaviors of adsorption, and effect on adsorption-desorption of coal-bed methane (CBM) of the nonionic fluorocarbon surfactant (4-hydroxyethyl ether) (pentadecafluoro-alkyl) in the development process of CBM. The results show that the surfactant adsorption pattern is consistent with the Langmuir adsorption law for different rank coals, and the adsorption capacity is increasing from low-rank coal to high-rank coal. The surfactant adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic, indicating that augmentation of temperature facilitates the adsorption of surfactant. The adsorption densities over electrolytes concentration on the surface of low-rank and medium-rank coal show the same trend; while for high-rank coal, it gives some details about the different trends. Adsorption densities decrease with pH value increasing of bulk solution for all coal samples. Adsorption behavior of surfactant is conducive to accelerating CBM desorption through wettability alteration of a coal surface.

Gas transport through coal matrix is generally assumed to be dominated by gas phase diffusion. However, the matrix pores contain a certain amount of water, which occupies the gas phase diffusion channels. Gas phase diffusion theory cannot be used to interpret the effect of water. This article studies the phase behavior and flow mechanisms in coal matrix. It concludes that the desorbed gas exists in matrix pores with two states: dissolved gas and free gas. Dissolved gas diffuses in water, and free gas flows into the cleats. These results provide a theoretical basis for well productivity prediction and well testing.
