Development of Conductive Organic Molecular Assemblies: Organic Metals, Superconductors, and Exotic Functional Materials

Enhanced Physical Properties in a Pentacene Polymorph.

New synthetic methods for heterocyclic 1,3,2-dithiazolyl (DTA) radicals have been developed, and trends in the molecular spin distributions and electrochemical properties of a series of DTA radicals are reported. The crystal structures of [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-f][1,3,2]benzodithiazol-2-yl (TBDTA) and [1,3,2]pyrazinodithiazol-2-yl (PDTA) have been determined. The structure of TBDTA (at 293 and 95 K) contains two molecules in the asymmetric unit, each of which generates π-stacked arrays, one consisting of antiparallel chains of centrosymmetrically associated dimers, the other comprising parallel chains of unassociated radicals. The structure of PDTA (at 293 and 95 K) is simpler, consisting of slipped stacks of π-dimers. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility (χP) measurements on TBDTA indicate essentially paramagnetic behavior for the unassociated radical π-stacks over the range 5−400 K. By contrast PDTA is diamagnetic at all temperatures below 300 K, but between 300 and 350 K the value of χP follows...

Bistabilities in 1,3,2-dithiazolyl radicals.

A category of parallel π-stacking interaction, termed pancake bonding, is surveyed. The main characteristics are: the interaction occurs among radicals with highly delocalized π-electrons in their singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs), the contact distances in the π-stacking direction are shorter than the typical van der Waals distances, and the stabilization obtained by the bonding combination of the SOMO orbitals leads to direct atom-to-atom overlap with strong orientational preferences. These atypical intermolecular interactions contain a component of electron sharing between the radicals that can be viewed as covalent-like. Pancake bonded dimers characteristically have low-lying singlet and triplet states and show characteristic interlayer vibrational modes. Pancake bonded aggregates serve as molecular components in many conducting and other functional organic materials. The role of van der Waals (vdW) interactions in pancake bonded dimers, chains, and other aggregates is different from closed shell vdW aggregates: here the Pauli repulsions reduce the attractive dispersion interaction significantly. Fluxionality between π- and σ-bonded aggregates often occur in the context of pancake bonding. Both experimental and computational aspects are reviewed.

Pancake Bonding: An Unusual Pi-Stacking Interaction.

The Chemistry of Dithiadiazolylium and Dithiadiazolyl Rings

The preparation and solid-state characterization of the 1,3-phenylene-bridged bis(dithiadiazolyl) and bis(diselenadiazolyl) diradicals 1,3-[(E2N2C)C6H4(CN2E2)] (E = S, Se) are reported. The isomorphous crystals of 1,3-[(E2N2C)C6H4(CN2E2)] so obtained are tetragonal, space group I41/a. Stacks of diradical molecules, linked vertically in a zigzag fashion through alternaie ends by long E- - -E contacts (mean 3.140/3.284 A, for E = S/Se), are arranged in pinwheellike clusters about the 41 and ¯4 axes, producing complex patterns of interstack E- - -E contacts. Both compounds show the presence of spin defects in the lattice, and there is a very large enhancement in the paramagnetism of the sulfur compound at high temperatures. The selenium compound is a semiconductor, with a room temperature conductivity of 2 × 10-4 S cm-1. Solid-state NMR experiments find enhanced relaxation times, which have their origin in the presence of a mobile paramagnetic defect. Extended Huckel band structure calculations show the materials to be semiconductors, with band gaps of about 1.0/0.8 eV for E = S/Se. Although the compounds adopt a columnar structure, the calculations indicate significant interactions between the stacks and the materials exhibit well-developed three dimensionality. The enhanced paramagnetism in the sulfur compound is attributed to the presence of thermally generated phase kinks in the lattice, whereas the selenium compound is classified as an intrinsic semiconductor.
