How to evaluate public displays

TL;DR: An overview of study types, paradigms, and methods for evaluation both in the lab and in the real world is provided and a set of guidelines for researchers and practitioners alike to be applied when evaluating public displays are provided.
Proceedings ArticleDOI

Using public displays to stimulate passive engagement, active engagement, and discovery in public spaces

TL;DR: This paper describes and conceptualizes related processes that occur around public displays, based on in-depth observations of people interacting with a publicly fielded display application in a city center, to lay the foundations for designing engaging public display systems that stimulate PACD.
Book ChapterDOI

Designing shared public display networks: implications from today's paper-based notice areas

TL;DR: This work investigated today's practices surrounding shared notice areas, i.e. places where customers and visitors can put up event posters and classifieds, such as shop windows or notice boards, and provides a systematic assessment of factors that inhibit or promote the shared use of public display space.
Proceedings ArticleDOI

Glancing at personal navigation devices can affect driving: experimental results and design implications

TL;DR: It is found that drivers using a navigation system with a graphical display indeed spent less time looking at the road compared to those using a Navigation system with spoken directions only, and glancing at the display was correlated with higher variance in driving performance measures.

P-LAYERS -- A Layered Framework Addressing the Multifaceted Issues Facing Community-Supporting Public Display Deployments

TL;DR: The P-LAYERS framework provides a valuable aid for researchers looking to work in this space, alerting them to the issues they are likely to encounter during their deployments, and help them plan accordingly.
