TL;DR: In this article, the air mass factors used to convert line-of-sight "slant" columns to vertical columns were re-calculated for this region based on updated and higher resolution input information including absorber profiles from a regional-scale (15 km × 15 km resolution) air quality model, higher spatial and temporal resolution surface reflectivity, and an improved treatment of snow.

TL;DR: This study presents the first interannual comparison of SO2 emissions and the satellite SO2 observations from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument for Indian coal-fired power plants during the OMI era of 2005-2012, and suggests the air quality monitoring network needs to be optimized to reflect the true SO2 situation in India.
