Increasing Age Alters Transbilayer Fluidity and Cholesterol Asymmetry in Synaptic Plasma Membranes of Mice
TL;DR: Age differences in SPM leaflet structure may be an important factor regulating activity of certain membrane proteins, and Transbilayer fluidity and cholesterol asymmetry were altered in S PMs of older mice.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain membrane cholesterol domains, aging and amyloid beta-peptides.
TL;DR: It is proposed that age changes in the asymmetric distribution of cholesterol in contrast to total or bulk cholesterol in neuronal plasma membranes provides a cooperative environment for accumulation of Abeta in plasma membranes and the accumulation ofAbeta is due in part to a direct physico-chemical interaction with cholesterol in the membrane exofacial or outer leaflet.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distribution and Fluidizing Action of Soluble and Aggregated Amyloid β-Peptide in Rat Synaptic Plasma Membranes
R. Preston Mason,Robert F. Jacob,Mary F. Walter,Pamela E. Mason,Nicolai A. Avdulov,Svetlana V. Chochina,Urule Igbavboa,W. Gibson Wood +7 more
TL;DR: Fluorescence experiments showed that both soluble and aggregated Aβ1–40 significantly increased SPM bulk and protein annular fluidity, independent of specific receptor binding.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recent advances in brain cholesterol dynamics : transport, domains, and alzheimer's disease
W. Gibson Wood,W. Gibson Wood,Friedhelm Schroeder,Nicolai A. Avdulov,Nicolai A. Avdulov,Svetlana V. Chochina,Svetlana V. Chochina,Urule Igbavboa,Urule Igbavboa +8 more
TL;DR: Recent contributions to the understanding of brain cholesterol dynamics are examined, focusing on extracellular and intracellular lipid carrier proteins, membrane cholesterol domains, and emerging evidence linking an association between cholesterol dynamics and Alzheimer's disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transbilayer Distribution of Cholesterol Is Modified in Brain Synaptic Plasma Membranes of Knockout Mice Deficient in the Low‐Density Lipoprotein Receptor, Apolipoprotein E, or Both Proteins
TL;DR: It is demonstrated for the first time that SPM lipid structure is altered in mice deficient in apoE or the LDL receptor, and both apo E and the LDL receptors are involved in maintaining the transbilayer distribution of cholesterol.
