Journal ArticleDOI
The management of head-and-neck paragangliomas
TL;DR: The management of HNPGLs requires a multidisciplinary effort addressing the genetic, surgical, radiotherapeutic, oncological, neurological and endocrinological implications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevention of Adrenal Crisis: Cortisol Responses to Major Stress Compared to Stress Dose Hydrocortisone Delivery.
Alessandro Prete,Alessandro Prete,Angela E Taylor,Angela E Taylor,Irina Bancos,Irina Bancos,David J. Smith,Mark A. Foster,Mark A. Foster,Sibylle Kohler,Violet Fazal-Sanderson,John Komninos,Donna M. O'Neil,Dimitra Vassiliadi,Christopher J Mowatt,Radu Mihai,Joanne L. Fallowfield,Djillali Annane,Janet M. Lord,Janet M. Lord,Janet M. Lord,Brian G. Keevil,John A.H. Wass,Niki Karavitaki,Niki Karavitaki,Wiebke Arlt,Wiebke Arlt,Wiebke Arlt +27 more
TL;DR: Serum cortisol was increased in all stress conditions, with the highest values observed in surgery and sepsis, and continuous intravenous hydrocortisone infusion should be favored over intermittent bolus administration in the prevention and treatment of adrenal crisis during major stress.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pituitary apoplexy in non-functioning pituitary adenomas: long term follow up is important because of significant numbers of tumour recurrences.
Aparna Pal,Cristina Capatina,A.P. Tenreiro,P.D. Guardiola,James V. Byrne,Simon Cudlip,Niki Karavitaki,John A.H. Wass +7 more
TL;DR: It is unclear whether regrowth, if it occurs, does so less frequently than with non‐apoplectic non‐functioning pituitary macroadenomas that have undergone surgery without postoperative irradiation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Opioids and Their Endocrine Effects: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Friso de Vries,Mees Bruin,Daniel J. Lobatto,Olaf M. Dekkers,Jan W. Schoones,Wouter R van Furth,Alberto M. Pereira,Niki Karavitaki,Niki Karavitaki,Niki Karavitaki,Nienke R. Biermasz,Amir H Zamanipoor Najafabadi +11 more
TL;DR: Hypogonadism occurs in more than half of male opioid users, and hypocortisolism in approximately one-fifth of all patients, so periodical evaluation of at least the gonadal and adrenal axes is therefore advisable.
Journal ArticleDOI
The value of an acute octreotide suppression test in predicting long-term responses to depot somatostatin analogues in patients with active acromegaly
TL;DR: This work presents data on a biochemical test suitable for predicting the responsiveness to these depot agents, octreotide LAR (LAR) and lanreotide (LAN), which are among the most effective available medical therapies for acromegaly.
