Journal ArticleDOI

The spider tree of life: phylogeny of Araneae based on target‐gene analyses from an extensive taxon sampling

TL;DR: A phylogenetic analysis of spiders using a dataset of 932 spider species, representing 115 families (only the family Synaphridae is unrepresented), 700 known genera, and additional representatives of 26 unidentified or undescribed genera is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reconstructing web evolution and spider diversification in the molecular era.

TL;DR: A broad higher-level phylogeny of spiders is constructed combining molecular data with traditional morphological and behavioral characters to test the hypothesis that the spider orb web evolved only once, and finds strong support for a single origin of orb webs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Phylogeny of the orb-web building spiders (Araneae, Orbiculariae: Deinopoidea, Araneoidea)

TL;DR: While the spinning complement of single pairs of glands does not change much over the evolution of the group, multiple sets of glands are dramatically reduced in number, implying that derived araneoids are incapable of spinning many silk fibers at the same time.
Journal ArticleDOI

A phylogenetic analysis of the orb-weaving spider family Araneidae (Arachnida, Araneae)

TL;DR: The first cladistic analysis focused at the tribal and subfamily level of the orb-weaving spider family Araneidae shows behavioral and spinneret features are most consistent on the phylogeny, while sexual size dimorphism evolved once in nephilines, twice in araneids, and reverted to monomorphism five times.
