Toward Intelligent Metasurfaces: The Progress from Globally Tunable Metasurfaces to Software-Defined Metasurfaces with an Embedded Network of Controllers
Odysseas Tsilipakos,Anna C. Tasolamprou,Alexandros Pitilakis,Fu Liu,Xuchen Wang,Mohammad Sajjad Mirmoosa,Dimitrios C. Tzarouchis,Dimitrios C. Tzarouchis,Sergi Abadal,Hamidreza Taghvaee,Christos Liaskos,Ageliki Tsioliaridou,Julius Georgiou,Albert Cabellos-Aparicio,Eduard Alarcon,Sotiris Ioannidis,Sotiris Ioannidis,Andreas Pitsillides,Ian F. TL;DR: A new research direction of software‐defined metAsurfaces is described, which attempts to push metasurfaces toward unprecedented levels of functionality by harnessing the opportunities offered by their software interface as well as their inter‐ and intranetwork connectivity and establish them in real‐world applications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intelligent Metasurfaces with Continuously Tunable Local Surface Impedance for Multiple Reconfigurable Functions
Fu Liu,Odysseas Tsilipakos,Alexandros Pitilakis,Anna C. Tasolamprou,Mohammad Sajjad Mirmoosa,Nikolaos V. Kantartzis,Do-Hoon Kwon,Maria Kafesaki,Costas M. Soukoulis,Sergei A. Tretyakov +9 more
TL;DR: This paper numerically shows that without changing the main body of the metasurface, one can achieve tunable perfect absorption and tunable anomalous reflection in the reflection mode in the microwave frequency range.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intelligent Metasurfaces with Continuously Tunable Local Surface Impedance for Multiple Reconfigurable Functions.
Fu Liu,Odysseas Tsilipakos,Alexandros Pitilakis,Anna C. Tasolamprou,Mohammad Sajjad Mirmoosa,Nikolaos V. Kantartzis,Do-Hoon Kwon,Maria Kafesaki,Costas M. Soukoulis,Sergei A. Tretyakov +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, an example of an intelligent metasurface which operates in the reflection mode in the microwave frequency range is presented, where mixed-signal integrated circuits are embedded in the unit cells by connecting two metal patches over a thin grounded substrate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Optimal Modeling of Infinite Graphene Sheets via a Class of Generalized FDTD Schemes
Georgios D. Bouzianas,Nikolaos V. Kantartzis,Christos S. Antonopoulos,Theodoros D. Tsiboukis +3 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a frequency-dependent finite-difference time-domain method is used to analyze the surface conductivity of a single unit cell in terms of a total-field/scattered-field formulation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Design and Development of Software Defined Metamaterials for Nanonetworks
Christos Liaskos,Ageliki Tsioliaridou,Andreas Pitsillides,Ian F. Akyildiz,Nikolaos V. Kantartzis,Antonios Lalas,Xenofontas Dimitropoulos,Sotiris Ioannidis,Maria Kafesaki,Costas M. Soukoulis +9 more
TL;DR: The paper concludes by outlining the research challenges pertaining to the analysis, design, prototyping, manufacturing, and initial application scenarios of the proposed software defined metamaterials (SDMs), whose attributes can be changed programmatically via a computer interface.
