TL;DR: The second ExoMars mission will be launched in 2020 to target an ancient location interpreted to have strong potential for past habitability and for preserving physical and chemical biosignatures (as well as abiotic/prebiotic organics).
Journal ArticleDOI
Venus Express—The first European mission to Venus
Håkan Svedhem,D. V. Titov,D. McCoy,Jean-Pierre Lebreton,S. Barabash,Jean-Loup Bertaux,Pierre Drossart,Vittorio Formisano,Bernd Häusler,Oleg Korablev,W. J. Markiewicz,D. Clochet,M. Coradini +26 more
TL;DR: Venus Express as discussed by the authors is the first European mission to planet Venus, which aims at a comprehensive investigation of the Venus atmosphere and plasma environment and will address some important aspects of the surface physics from orbit.
Journal ArticleDOI
An overview of the descent and landing of the Huygens probe on Titan
Jean-Pierre Lebreton,Olivier Witasse,Claudio Sollazzo,Thierry Blancquaert,Patrice Couzin,Anne-Marie Schipper,Jeremy B. Jones,Dennis L. Matson,Leonid I. Gurvits,David H. Atkinson,Bobby Kazeminejad,Miguel Pérez-Ayúcar +11 more
TL;DR: An overview of the Huygens mission is reported, which enabled studies of the atmosphere and surface, including in situ sampling of the organic chemistry, and revealed an Earth-like landscape.
Journal ArticleDOI
Discovery of an aurora on Mars.
Jean-Loup Bertaux,François Leblanc,Olivier Witasse,Eric Quémerais,Jean Lilensten,S. A. Stern,Bill R. Sandel,Oleg Korablev +7 more
TL;DR: The martian aurora is a distinct type of aurora not seen before in the Solar System: it is unlike aurorae at Earth and the giant planets, which lie at the foot of the intrinsic magnetic field lines near the magnetic poles, and unlike venusian auroras, which are diffuse, sometimes spreading over the entire disk.
Journal ArticleDOI
Venus Express science planning
D. V. Titov,Håkan Svedhem,Detlef Koschny,R. Hoofs,S. Barabash,Jean-Loup Bertaux,Pierre Drossart,Vittorio Formisano,Bernd Häusler,Oleg Korablev,W. J. Markiewicz,D. Nevejans,Martin Pätzold,Giuseppe Piccioni,T. L. Zhang,D. Merritt,Olivier Witasse,Joe Zender,Andrea Accomazzo,M. Sweeney,D. Trillard,M. Janvier,A. Clochet +22 more
TL;DR: The observation timelines for each phase were developed in a coordinated way to optimize the payload activity, maximize the overall mission science return, and to fit into the available mission budgets.
