Data Mining - Concepts and Techniques.

The literature on interference in the Stroop Color-Word Task, covering over 50 years and some 400 studies, is organized and reviewed. In so doing, a set of 18 reliable empirical finding is isolated that must be captured by any successful theory of the Stroop effect. Existing theoretical positions are summarized and evaluated in view of this critical evidence and the 2 major candidate theories ―relative speed of processing and automaticity of reading― are found to be wanting. It is concluded that recent theories placing the explanatory weight on parallel processing of the irrelevant and the relevant dimensions are likely to be more sucessful than are earlier theories attempting to locate a single bottleneck in attention

Constructing Grounded Theory: A Practical Guide through Qualitative Analysis

Mobility in older adults is associated with better quality of life. However, evidence suggests that older people spend less time out-of-home than younger adults. Traditional methods for assessing mobility have serious limitations. Wearable technologies provide the possibility of objectively assessing mobility over extended periods enabling better estimates of levels of mobility to be made and possible predictors to be explored. Eighty-six community dwelling older adults (mean age 79.8 years) had their mobility assessed for one week using GPS, accelerometry and self-report. Outcomes were: number of steps, time spent in dynamic outdoor activity, total distance travelled and total number of journeys made over the week. Assessments were also made of personal, cognitive, psychological, physical and social variables. Four regression models were calculated (one for each outcome). The models predicted 32 to 43% of the variance in levels of mobility. The ability to balance on one leg significantly predicted all four outcomes. In addition, cognitive ability predicted number of journeys made per week and time spent engaged in dynamic outdoor activity, and age significantly predicted total distance travelled. Overall estimates of mobility indicated step counts that were similar to those shown by previous research but distances travelled, measured by GPS, were lower. These findings suggest that mobility in this sample of older adults is predicted by the ability to balance on one leg. Possible interventions to improve out-of-home mobility could target balance. The fact that participants travelled shorter distances than those reported in previous studies is interesting since this high-functioning subgroup would be expected to demonstrate the highest levels.

What parents make of MMR and the internet

The use of social media has steadily grown in recent years, and now more than ever, people are logging on to websites like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and Google Latitude with the aim of broadcasting their location information. The ability to 'check in' has enabled social network site users to broadcast detailed information about their whereabouts and also what they are doing there. This is encouraged by the implementation of location-based services (LBS) - technology which uses information about the geographical position of a mobile device. To date, little academic research has focused on perceptions of, or intentions to use these systems. This paper describes a study which utilised a psychological framework originally designed to predict intentions to use LBS, which was modified to assess intentions to use LBS within a social networking site (SNS) context. Participants completed an online survey, assessing their beliefs surrounding, and intentions to use, LBS via SNS. We find that trust of the social network provider as well as disclosure preferences influence intentions to use SNS with friends, family, and colleagues. This work highlights an important area of psychological research that has not previously been considered, and provides a theoretical foundation from which further work could explore location-tracking aspects of SNS.

This chapter will firstly describe the key characteristics of hoarding disorder. It will then explain the term ‘digital hoarding’ and provide examples and a case study. It will then link digital hoarding behaviours with relevant aspects of personal information management and explain how such behaviours may have negative impacts on an organization, particularly in relation to cybersecurity. It will then draw on the recent studies conducted by our research team exploring how to measure digital hoarding and how people think about their digital behaviours in relation to their personal and work files, with particular reference to e-mails. The chapter will end by providing some suggestions as to how an individual and an organization may be able to reduce or at least better control their digital hoarding behaviours and thus improve their cybersecurity.
