Field Survey of the 27 February 2010 Chile Tsunami
Hermann M. Fritz,Catherine M. Petroff,Patricio A. Catalán,Rodrigo Cienfuegos,Patricio Winckler,Nikos Kalligeris,Robert Weiss,Sergio Barrientos,Gianina Meneses,Carolina Valderas-Bermejo,C. W. Ebeling,Athanassios Papadopoulos,Manuel Contreras,Rafael Almar,Juan Carlos Dominguez,Costas E. Synolakis +15 more
TL;DR: On 27 February 2010, a magnitude Mw = 88 earthquake occurred off the coast of Chile's Maule region causing substantial damage and loss of life Ancestral tsunami knowledge from the 1960 event combined with education and evacuation exercises prompted most coastal residents to spontaneously evacuate after the earthquake Many of the tsunami victims were tourists in coastal campgrounds.
Journal ArticleDOI
Beach Wizard: Nearshore bathymetry estimation through assimilation of model computations and remote observations
Ap van Dongeren,Nathaniel G. Plant,Anna Cohen,Dano Roelvink,Merrick C. Haller,Patricio A. Catalán,Patricio A. Catalán +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a data-model assimilation method (called "Beach Wizard") is presented with which the nearshore subtidal bathymetry can be accurately estimated based on video-derived observations of wave roller dissipation and variation of the intertidal shoreline, and/or radar-derived observation of wave celerity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Present and Future Challenges of Coastal Erosion in Latin America
Rodolfo Silva,M. Luisa Martínez,Patrick A. Hesp,Patricio A. Catalán,Andrés F. Osorio,Raúl Martell,Mónica Fossati,Graziela Miot da Silva,Ismael Mariño-Tapia,Pedro de Souza Pereira,Rodrigo Cienguegos,Antonio H. F. Klein,Georges Govaere +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, Silva et al. present and future challenges of coastal erosion in Latin America, including sedimentary cliffs, deeply incised estuaries, headlands, barrier coasts and low lying, muddy coastal plains.
Journal ArticleDOI
Remote sensing of breaking wave phase speeds with application to non-linear depth inversions
TL;DR: In this article, a number of existing models for surface wave phase speeds (linear and nonlinear, breaking and non-breaking waves) are reviewed and tested against phase speed data from a large-scale laboratory experiment.
Journal ArticleDOI
The 16 September 2015 Chile Tsunami from the Post-Tsunami Survey and Numerical Modeling Perspectives
Rafael Aránguiz,Gabriel González,Juan González,Patricio A. Catalán,Patricio A. Catalán,Rodrigo Cienfuegos,Yuji Yagi,Ryo Okuwaki,Luisa Urra,Karla Paola Morales Contreras,Ian Del Rio,Camilo Rojas +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, three tsunami survey teams covered approximately 700 km of the Pacific coast, recording 83 tsunami flow depth and runup measurements, and the maximum runup was found to be 10.8 m at only one small bay, in front of the inferred tsunami source area.
