The discovery of superconducting H3S with a critical temperature Tc∼200 K opened a door to room temperature superconductivity and stimulated further extensive studies of hydrogen-rich compounds stabilized by high pressure. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the yttrium-hydrogen system with the highest predicted Tcs among binary compounds and discuss the contradictions between different theoretical calculations and experimental data. We synthesized yttrium hydrides with the compositions of YH3, YH4, YH6 and YH9 in a diamond anvil cell and studied their crystal structures, electrical and magnetic transport properties, and isotopic effects. We found superconductivity in the Im-3m YH6 and P63/mmc YH9 phases with maximal Tcs of ∼220 K at 183 GPa and ∼243 K at 201 GPa, respectively. Fm-3m YH10 with the highest predicted Tc > 300 K was not observed in our experiments, and instead, YH9 was found to be the hydrogen-richest yttrium hydride in the studied pressure and temperature range up to record 410 GPa and 2250 K. The discovery of high temperature superconductivity in hydrogen-rich compounds stimulates further extensive studies. Here, the authors report superconductivity in pressurized yttrium-hydrogen system with highest predicted Tc among binary compounds.

Highly Robust Reentrant Superconductivity in CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ under Pressure

Superconductivity at 253 K in lanthanum–yttrium ternary hydrides

Polyhydrides offer intriguing perspectives as high-temperature superconductors. Here we report the high-pressure synthesis of a series of lanthanum-yttrium ternary hydrides: cubic hexahydride $(La,Y)H_{6}$ with a critical temperature $T_{C}$ = 237 +/- 5 K and decahydrides $(La,Y)H_{10}$ with a maximum $T_{C}$ ~${253 K}$ and an extrapolated upper critical magnetic field $B_{C2(0)}$ up to ${135 T}$ at 183 GPa. This is one of the first examples of ternary high-$T_{C}$ superconducting hydrides. Our experiments show that a part of the atoms in the structures of recently discovered ${Im3m}$-$YH_{6}$ and ${Fm3m}$-$LaH_{10}$ can be replaced with lanthanum (~70 %) and yttrium (~25 %), respectively, with a formation of unique ternary superhydrides containing incorporated $La@H_{24}$ and $Y@H_{32}$ which are specific for ${Im3m}$-$LaH_{6}$ and ${Fm3m}$-$YH_{10}$. Ternary La-Y hydrides were obtained at pressures of 170-196 GPa via the laser heating of $P6_{3}$${/mmc}$ lanthanum-yttrium alloys in the ammonia borane medium at temperatures above 2000 K. A novel tetragonal $(La,Y)H_{4}$ was discovered as an impurity phase in synthesized cubic $(La,Y)H_{6}$. The current-voltage measurements show that the critical current density $J_{C}$ in $(La,Y)H_{10}$ may exceed $2500 A/mm^{2}$ at 4.2 K, which is comparable with that for commercial superconducting wires such as ${NbTi}$, $Nb_{3}$${Sn}$. Hydrides that are unstable in a pure form may nevertheless be stabilized at relatively low pressures in solid solutions with superhydrides having the same structure.

Superconductivity at 253 K in lanthanum-yttrium ternary hydrides.

The honeycomb lattice is one of the simplest lattice structures. Electrons and spins on this simple lattice, however, often form exotic phases with non-trivial excitations. Massless Dirac fermions can emerge out of itinerant electrons, as demonstrated experimentally in graphene, and a topological quantum spin liquid with exotic quasiparticles can be realized in spin-1/2 magnets, as proposed theoretically in the Kitaev model. The quantum spin liquid is a long-sought exotic state of matter, in which interacting spins remain quantum-disordered without spontaneous symmetry breaking. The Kitaev model describes one example of a quantum spin liquid, and can be solved exactly by introducing two types of Majorana fermion. Realizing a Kitaev model in the laboratory, however, remains a challenge in materials science. Mott insulators with a honeycomb lattice of spin–orbital-entangled pseudospin-1/2 moments have been proposed, including the 5d-electron systems α-Na2IrO3 (ref. 5) and α-Li2IrO3 (ref. 6) and the 4d-electron system α-RuCl3 (ref. 7). However, these candidates were found to magnetically order rather than form a liquid at sufficiently low temperatures, owing to non-Kitaev interactions. Here we report a quantum-liquid state of pseudospin-1/2 moments in the 5d-electron honeycomb compound H3LiIr2O6. This iridate does not display magnetic ordering down to 0.05 kelvin, despite an interaction energy of about 100 kelvin. We observe signatures of low-energy fermionic excitations that originate from a small number of spin defects in the nuclear-magnetic-resonance relaxation and the specific heat. We therefore conclude that H3LiIr2O6 is a quantum spin liquid. This result opens the door to finding exotic quasiparticles in a strongly spin–orbit-coupled 5d-electron transition-metal oxide.

Superconductivity of Lanthanum Superhydride Investigated Using the Standard Four-Probe Configuration under High Pressures

We report the discovery of superconductivity in high-quality single crystals of transition-metal pnictides WP grown by chemical vapor transport method. Bulk superconductivity is observed at ${T}_{\text{c}}\ensuremath{\sim}0.8\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ at ambient pressure by electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility, and specific-heat measurements. The effects of magnetic field on the superconducting transitions are studied, leading to a large anisotropy parameter around 2 with the in-plane and out-of-plane upper critical fields of ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}_{\text{c}2,\ensuremath{\parallel}}=17.2\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mT}$ and ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}_{\text{c}2,\ensuremath{\perp}}=8.5\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mT}$, respectively. The low value of electron-phonon coupling estimated from the normal-state resistivity and specific-heat measurements suggest that WP is a weak-coupling BCS superconductor. Our finding demonstrates that WP is the first superconductor among $5d$--transition metal pnictides with MnP-type structure at ambient pressure, which will help in the search for new superconductors in transition-metal pnictides.

Superconductivity in WP single crystals


 The lutetium dihydride LuH2 is stable at ambient conditions. Here we show that its color undergoes sequential changes from dark blue at ambient pressure to pink at ~2.2 GPa and then to bright red at ~4 GPa upon compression in a diamond anvil cell. Such a pressure-induced color change in LuH2 is reversible and it is very similar to that recently reported in the N-doped lutetium hydride [Nature 
 615, 244 (2023)]. However, our preliminary resistance measurements on LuH2 under pressures up to ~7 GPa evidenced no superconductivity down to 1.5 K.

The Mn-based superconductor is rare owing to the strong magnetic pair-breaking effect. Here we report on the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in KMn_{6}Bi_{5}, which becomes the first ternary Mn-based superconductor. At ambient pressure, the quasi-one-dimensional KMn_{6}Bi_{5} is an antiferromagnetic metal with T_{N}≈75 K. By measuring resistance and ac magnetic susceptibility under hydrostatic pressures up to 14.2 GPa in a cubic anvil cell apparatus, we find that its antiferromagnetic transition can be suppressed completely at a critical pressure of P_{c}≈13 GPa, around which bulk superconductivity emerges and displays a superconducting dome with the maximal T_{c}^{onset}=9.3 K achieved at about 14 GPa. The close proximity of superconductivity to a magnetic instability in the temperature-pressure phase diagram of KMn_{6}Bi_{5} and an unusually large μ_{0}H_{c2}(0) exceeding the Pauli paramagnetic limit suggests an unconventional magnetism-mediated paring mechanism. In contrast to the binary MnP, the flexibility of the crystal structure and chemical compositions in the ternary AMn_{6}Bi_{5} (A=alkali metal) can open a new avenue for finding more Mn-based superconductors. 

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity up to 9 K in the Quasi-One-Dimensional

Among the metal hydrides, Th4H15 is the first reported superconductor with a relatively high T c ≈ 8 K at ambient pressure. Here we report on the synthesis and characterization of a low-T c superconducting modification of Th4H15, which is obtained via hydrogenating Th metal at 5 GPa and 800 °C by using the ammonia borane as the hydrogen source. Measurements of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat confirm that the obtained Th4H15 sample shows a bulk superconducting transition at T c ≈ 6 K, which is about 2 K lower than that reported previously. Various characteristic superconducting parameters have been extracted for this compound and unusual lattice dynamics were evidenced from the specific-heat analysis.
