Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of prolonged freezing of semen on exosome recovery and biologic activity.
Jennifer L. Welch,Marisa N. Madison,Marisa N. Madison,Joseph B. Margolick,Shannon Galvin,Phalguni Gupta,Otoniel Martinez-Maza,Chandravanu Dash,Chioma M. Okeoma +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of illicit drugs and prolonged freezing on exosome bioactivity was investigated, and it was shown that the effects of illicit drug use and freezing of exosomes had no effect on SE-mediated HIV-1 inhibition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Persistent HIV type 1 infection in semen and blood compartments in patients after long-term potent antiretroviral therapy.
Jodi K. Craigo,Bruce K. Patterson,Bruce K. Patterson,Shirish Paranjpe,Kathy Kulka,Ming Ding,John W. Mellors,Ronald C. Montelaro,Phalguni Gupta +8 more
TL;DR: Previous studies suggest that the genital and blood compartments likely serve as distinct reservoirs harboring latent HIV-1 during prolonged drug therapy, and distinct envelope populations were detected in these viral RNA populations following therapy, indicating possible selection of quasispecies.
Journal ArticleDOI
The retrocyclin analogue RC-101 prevents human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection of a model human cervicovaginal tissue construct.
Amy L. Cole,Anna Herasimtschuk,Phalguni Gupta,Alan J. Waring,Robert I. Lehrer,Alexander M. Cole +5 more
TL;DR: RC‐101, an analogue of retrocyclin, prevented HIV‐1 infection in an organ‐like construct of human cervicovaginal tissue and retained full activity in the presence of vaginal fluid, supporting the potential development of RC‐101 as a topical microbicide to prevent HIV‐ 1 infection and transmission.
Journal ArticleDOI
High replication fitness and transmission efficiency of HIV-1 subtype C from India: Implications for subtype C predominance.
Milka A. Rodriguez,Ming Ding,Deena Ratner,Yue Chen,Srikanth Tripathy,Smita Kulkarni,Ramdas Chatterjee,Patrick M. Tarwater,Phalguni Gupta +8 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the higher replication fitness and transmission efficiency of subtype C virus compared to subtype A virus from India is most probably not due to the envelope gene alone and may be due to genes present within the 5' half of the viral genome or to a more complex interaction between the genes located within the two halves of theiral genome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of physiological fluids on physical-chemical characteristics and activity of topical vaginal microbicide products
Alexandra B. Sassi,Charles E. Isaacs,Bernard J. Moncla,Phalguni Gupta,Sharon L. Hillier,Lisa C. Rohan +5 more
TL;DR: Results showed that pH was not affected when products were diluted with VFS; however, increases in pH were observed following CMS dilution, and viscosity was significantly decreased for all the dilutions tested excepted for some of the liposome products.
