Journal ArticleDOI
Loss-of-function mutations in the cathepsin C gene result in periodontal disease and palmoplantar keratosis
Carmel Toomes,Jacqueline James,A. J. Wood,Chu Lee Wu,D. McCormick,Nicholas Lench,C. Hewitt,L M Moynihan,Emma Roberts,C.G. Woods,AF Markham,Melanie Wong,Richard P Widmer,Khaled Abdul Ghaffar,MB Pemberton,Ibtessam Ramzy Hussein,Samia A. Temtamy,Robin M. Davies,Andrew P. Read,Philip Sloan,Michael J. Dixon,Nalin Thakker,Nalin Thakker +22 more
TL;DR: The gene (CTSC) encoding the lysosomal protease cathepsin C (or dipeptidyl aminopeptidase I) lies within this interval and the genomic structure of CTSC is defined and mutations in all eight families are found.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of a new binary system of grading oral epithelial dysplasia for prediction of malignant transformation
TL;DR: The present study showed that more consensus scoring on either the degree of dysplasia, assessment of risk or the presence of each morphological characteristic by a panel should be encouraged, and the new binary grading system complemented the WHO Classification 2005 and may have merit in helping clinicians to make critical clinical decisions particularly for the cases of moderate Dysplasia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relation of a hypoxia metagene derived from head and neck cancer to prognosis of multiple cancers.
Stuart Winter,Francesca M. Buffa,Priyamal Silva,Crispin J. Miller,Helen R Valentine,Helen Turley,Ketan A. Shah,Graham J. Cox,Rogan Corbridge,Jarrod J Homer,B.T. Musgrove,Nicholas J Slevin,Philip Sloan,Patricia M Price,Catharine M L West,Adrian L. Harris +15 more
TL;DR: The work highlights the validity and potential of using data from analysis of in vitro stress pathways for deriving a biological metagene/gene signature in vivo and outdoing the original intrinsic classifier.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of Human Papilloma Virus Diagnostic Testing in Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Sensitivity, Specificity, and Prognostic Discrimination
Andrew Schache,Triantafilos Liloglou,Janet M. Risk,Anastasia Filia,Terence M. Jones,Jon Sheard,Julia A. Woolgar,Timothy R. Helliwell,Asterios Triantafyllou,Max Robinson,Philip Sloan,Colin Harvey-Woodworth,Daniel Sisson,Richard Shaw +13 more
TL;DR: Caution must be exercised in applying HPV16 diagnostic tests because of significant disparities in accuracy and prognostic value in previously published techniques.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oral potentially malignant disorders: A consensus report from an international seminar on nomenclature and classification, convened by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Cancer.
Saman Warnakulasuriya,Omar Kujan,José Manuel Aguirre-Urizar,Jose V. Bagan,Miguel Ángel González-Moles,Alexander Ross Kerr,Giovanni Lodi,Fernanda Weber Mello,Luís Monteiro,Graham R. Ogden,Philip Sloan,Newell W. Johnson,Newell W. Johnson +12 more
TL;DR: It is recommended the establishment of a global research consortium to further study the natural history of OPMDs based on the classification and nomenclature proposed here, and link them to evidence-based interventions, to facilitate the prevention and management of lip and oral cavity cancer.
