Journal ArticleDOI
Total thyroidectomy for management of benign thyroid disease: review of 526 cases.
Rocco Domenico Alfonso Bellantone,Celestino Pio Lombardi,Maurizio Bossola,Mauro Boscherini,Carmela De Crea,Pier Francesco Alesina,Emanuela Traini,Pietro Princi,Marco Raffaelli +8 more
TL;DR: The results of this series show that TT can be performed safely in patients, with a low incidence of lifetime disabilities, and should therefore be considered a valuable option for treating benign thyroid diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Is routine supplementation therapy (calcium and vitamin D) useful after total thyroidectomy
Rocco Domenico Alfonso Bellantone,Celestino Pio Lombardi,Marco Raffaelli,Mauro Boscherini,Pier Francesco Alesina,Carmela De Crea,Emanuela Traini,Pietro Princi +7 more
TL;DR: Routine supplementation therapy with OC or VD effectively prevents symptomatic hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy and may allow for a safe early discharge and further studies are necessary to determine the best treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comprehensive re-sequencing of adrenal aldosterone producing lesions reveal three somatic mutations near the KCNJ5 potassium channel selectivity filter.
Tobias Åkerström,Joakim Crona,Alberto Delgado Verdugo,Lee F. Starker,Lee F. Starker,Kenko Cupisti,Holger S. Willenberg,Wolfram T. Knoefel,Wolfgang Saeger,Alfred C. Feller,Julian C. Y. Ip,Patsy S. Sidhu,Gunnar Westin,Hendrik Lehnert,Martin K. Walz,Göran Åkerström,Tobias Carling,Murim Choi,Richard P. Lifton,Peyman Björklund +38 more
TL;DR: Either of two somatic KCNJ5 mutations are highly prevalent and specific for aldosterone producing lesions, providing new insight into the pathogenesis of primary aldosteronism.
Journal ArticleDOI
Video-assisted vs conventional thyroid lobectomy: a randomized trial
Rocco Domenico Alfonso Bellantone,Celestino Pio Lombardi,Maurizio Bossola,Mauro Boscherini,Carmela De Crea,Pier Francesco Alesina,Emanuela Traini +6 more
TL;DR: Video-assisted thyroid lobectomy is a valid alternative to conventional surgery in patients with single, small nodular thyroid lesions and improves the cosmetic outcome of the cutaneous scar and reduces postoperative pain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Is the identification of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve mandatory in thyroid operation? Results of a prospective randomized study *
Rocco Domenico Alfonso Bellantone,Mauro Boscherini,Celestino Pio Lombardi,Maurizio Bossola,Francesco Rubino,Carmela De Crea,Pier Francesco Alesina,Emanuela Traini,Tiziana Cozza,Lucia D'Alatri +9 more
TL;DR: Even if the EBSLN often crosses the superior thyroid pedicle, especially in large goiters, this study demonstrated that accurate distal ligation of the branches of the inferior thyroid artery is a safe technique to prevent EBSN injury.
