Journal ArticleDOI
Psychological well-being in patients on 'adequate' doses of l-thyroxine: results of a large, controlled community-based questionnaire study.
Ponnusamy Saravanan,W.-F. Chau,N. Roberts,Kavita Vedhara,Rosemary Greenwood,Colin M. Dayan,Colin M. Dayan +6 more
TL;DR: Over 1% of the UK population is receiving thyroid hormone replacement with l‐thyroxine (T4) but many patients complain of persistent lethargy and related symptoms on T4 even with normal TSH levels, so a large, community‐based study is attempted to address this issue.
Journal ArticleDOI
Common variation in the DIO2 gene predicts baseline psychological well-being and response to combination thyroxine plus triiodothyronine therapy in hypothyroid patients.
Vijay Panicker,Ponnusamy Saravanan,Ponnusamy Saravanan,Bijay Vaidya,Jonathan Evans,Andrew T. Hattersley,Timothy M. Frayling,Colin M. Dayan +7 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that commonly inherited variation in the DIO2 gene is associated both with impaired baseline psychological well-being on T( 4) and enhanced response to combination T(4)/T(3) therapy, but did not affect serum thyroid hormone levels.
Journal ArticleDOI
High fat intake leads to acute postprandial exposure to circulating endotoxin in type 2 diabetic subjects.
Alison L. Harte,Madhusudhan C. Varma,Gyanendra Tripathi,K. C. McGee,Nasser M. Al-Daghri,Omar S. Al-Attas,Shaun Sabico,J. P. O'Hare,Antonio Ceriello,Ponnusamy Saravanan,Sudhesh Kumar,Philip G. McTernan +11 more
TL;DR: The data suggest that, in a compromised metabolic state such as type 2 diabetes, a continual snacking routine will cumulatively promote their condition more rapidly than in other individuals because of the greater exposure to endotoxin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased risk of ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes in women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus, a target group in general practice for preventive interventions: A population-based cohort study.
Barbara Daly,Konstantinos A Toulis,Neil Thomas,Krishna Gokhale,James Martin,Jonathan Webber,Deepi Keerthy,Kate Jolly,Ponnusamy Saravanan,Krishnarajah Nirantharakumar +9 more
TL;DR: Women diagnosed with GDM were at very high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and had a significantly increased incidence of hypertension and IHD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gestational diabetes: opportunities for improving maternal and child health.
Ponnusamy Saravanan,Ponnusamy Saravanan,Laura A. Magee,Anita Banerjee,Matthew Coleman,Peter von Dadelszen,Fiona C. Denison,Andrew Farmer,Sarah Finer,Julia Fox-Rushby,Richard I. G. Holt,Robert S. Lindsay,Lucy Mackillop,Michael Maresh,Fionnuala M. McAuliffe,David R. McCance,Fergus P. McCarthy,Claire L Meek,Helen R. Murphy,Jenny Myers,Dharmintra Pasupathy,Lucilla Poston,Rebecca M. Reynolds,Eleanor M. Scott,Nithya Sukumar,Bee K. Tan,Shakila Thangaratinam,Louise Webster,Sara L. White,Catherine Williamson +29 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that a shift is needed in the thinking about gestational diabetes; moving from the perception of a short-term condition that confers increased risks of large babies to a potentially modifiable long- term condition that contributes to the growing burden of childhood obesity and cardiometabolic disorders in women and the future generation.
